The St. George Astronomy Group (SGAG) was formed in November 2013 when several local amateur astronomers joined forces to accomplish three goals, not necessarily in this order.

  • Advance interest in, and appreciation and understanding of the science of astronomy via education, public star parties and other events.
  • Perform education about proper lighting and its contribution to preservation of dark skies over southwest Utah.
  • Engage in such other activities as promote a general interest in the science of astronomy.

SGAG represents the greater St. George area as far distant as Kanab and north of Cedar City. We are cooperating and working with the Southern Utah Space Foundation and the Colorado Plateau Dark Skies Cooperative (a unit of the International Dark-Skies Association). We have worked with Quail Creek/Gunlock State Park, City of Ivins, St. George Children’s Museum, Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, Grand-Canyon Parashant National Monument, Springdale City, Toquerville City, and the city of St. George. We are members of the Astronomy League and the Night Sky Network.

In late August of 2016 St. George Astronomy Group became a formal astronomy club. We have grown from 2 members in November of 2013 to 40 official club members. As the club has grown there were people that wanted more than just an informal organization. SGAG has evolved to meet its members needs.

Reasons to Join the Formal Club

  • Guest Speakers and activities at monthly meeting.
  • Available discounts on Astronomy and Sky & Telescope magazine subscriptions.
  • Quarterly Newsletter of the Astronomical League, The Reflector.
  • Free membership in the Astronomy League and the Night Sky Network

  • Semi-annual social events.

We are striving to make this organization a fun and educational club for everyone.
