Volunteering

There are many ways of volunteering - here are just a few:

Sacristy and Serving
The Sacristy Team assist with liturgy (formal services), help keep store cupboards stocked with everything from candles to communion wine, take care of laundry, polish candlesticks, and dozens of other duties. The old phrase "altar boy" may be familiar, but these days sacristies are staffed as much by women and girls as by men and boys. New volunteers are  lways welcome to join the team. If you haven't done it previously then we will provide all the training you require. The work of the Sacristy Team is highly important and deeply rewarding, and helps to keep the liturgical "show on the road".

Social
GUSTO is our church social organisation - the initials stand for St Gabriel's United Social Team Organisation. The members of GUSTO meet regularly to enjoy each other's company, but also to plan a social programme for all church members throughout the year. You will be welcome to join GUSTO and help us to organise all sorts of events, including:
  • Fund-raising events such as the Winter and Summer Fairs
  • Entertainments such as our regular Quiz Nights and musical evenings
  • Social functions such as parish parties, lunches, and outings
  • Refreshments to follow major services and church events
  • Special 'one-off' celebrations such as anniversaries and dedications

Community Mentoring
Our church is very involved with the provision of unpaid work ("community payback") for offenders. We work in partnership with London Probation Service. Alongside this work we also provide Community Mentoring, through which members of the local community volunteer a few hours each week to get to know young offenders and befriend them. The aim is to provide solid role models, friendship, and sometimes a bit of advice or encouragement, to help them to avoid re-offending in the future.

Reading or Singing
We always need help with the different elements of our Sunday worship. If you would like to be on a rota to read Bible lessons, or to sing the psalm, or otherwise to assist, then we'd love to hear from you.
