About Face Youth Theatre is Chicago's award-winning arts-based program for LGBTQ youth and their allies. The mission is to provide an innovative and rigorous arts-based series of programs that increase the safety, empowerment and leadership capacity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning youth and their allies (LGBTQA) in order to catalyze youth-led civic dialogue and action within schools and communities.
Over the past seven years, AFYT productions have been a part of the About Face Theatre main stage season with high quality production values and innovation in form and content. Past productions have premiered at the Goodman Theatre.
About Face Youth Theatre has been honored by the Mayor of Chicago through induction into the city's Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame. The program has also been recognized by the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN) with the GLSEN Chicago Pathfinder Award; the State's Attorney's Office of Cook County, Illinois with the Community Empowerment Award; and the American Psychological Association with a Presidential Citation. About Face is a recipient of the prestigious Human First Award by Horizon's Community Services and was one of just five organizations in the United States to receive a major capacity-building grant from The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund (U.S.).
