Stefania Gentili obtained her master’s degree in physics at the University of Pisa (Italy) in 1995 and her Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Udine (Italy) in 2003. Her Ph.D. focused on the application of neural networks and decision trees in machine learning procedures. She was research fellow at the Astronomical Observatory of Teramo in 1996-1997 and, from 1997 to 2003, she was at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Udine as Research Fellow and Ph.D. student. From 2003, she works at the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS), where she has a permanent position as researcher from 2010. She is author and co-author of papers on international journals and on books in the field of astrophysics, image analysis, artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistics and seismology. She acted as reviewer for international journals of both artificial intelligence and seismology and she was involved in national research projects funded by the Italian government and in international projects funded by European Union on the same topics. From 2016, she acted every year as convener for the Statistical Seismology session at European Geosciences Union General Assembly, and from 2018 at General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission – ESC. From 2017, she is the chairperson of the Scientific Council of the department Seismological Research Center (CRS) of OGS and, from 2018, coresponsible of the group “Structure and Seismicity” of CRS.

Her research interests involve:

  1. Temporal and spatial evolution of seismicity, both regarding seismic sequences and the background seismicity

  2. Evaluation and study of source parameters

  3. Seismic catalogues

  4. Artificial intelligence and statistical methods applied to seismology (machine learning and statistical seismology).
