16 - Jesus commissions the disciples on the mountain

O sing to the Lord a new song

All        for he has done marvellous things.  Alleluia.

Bible reading - Matthew 28:16-20

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’*

After the resurrection Jesus gives the disciples a mechanism for passing on his story.  They are to baptize and teach.  Baptism is how we are admitted into the community where the faith is shared and we find the support we need to nurture and be nurtured in this faith.  This community is an inseparable part of following his way.  Many today try to separate the baptism from commitment to mutual support, the church, and discipleship is impoverished by this.  The fundamental connection needs to be remade.

Risen Lord,

in baptism you adopt us

as your sons and daughters by grace.

Keep us faithful to the anointing of your presence

and our place within your fellowship.  Amen.

Sing to the Lord, bless his name

All        tell of his salvation from day to day.  Alleluia.
