10 - Jesus breathes the Spirit in the Upper Room

O sing to the Lord a new song

All        for he has done marvellous things.  Alleluia.

Bible reading – John 20:22-23

When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’

‘In Christ there is a new creation.  The old order has passed away and behold all things are new.’  (2 Corinthians 5:17)  It is therefore fitting that this new creation should take hold with a reminder of how all things came into being.  In the beginning, when God created, the Book of Genesis gives the image of God breathing over the formless void and where there was nothing, the beginnings of all there is emerges.  God breathing over things has quite an impact.  It also takes us to how Adam and Eve came to live, through God breathing into their nostrils.  This Spirit will be the Apostles’ very life force and without it they will be no where near up to the task.  With it they will surprise everyone, especially themselves.

Risen Lord,

the Spirit moved over the face of the waters

and brought forth life where there was none before.

Breathe new life into your people to live for you.  Amen.

Sing to the Lord, bless his name

All        tell of his salvation from day to day.  Alleluia.
