8 - Jesus promises the Spirit

O sing to the Lord a new song

All        for he has done marvellous things.  Alleluia.

Bible reading – Luke 24:44-49

Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.’ 45Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46and he said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Messiah* is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses* of these things. 49And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.’

As with the two friends on the road to Emmaus, so Jesus explains how the pieces fit together in terms of the Hebrew Scriptures, with which they were very familiar.  Even so, they are going to need help if they are going to witness to these things.  It might make sense, or some sense, when he is standing in the room, but once he has vanished they will be back to uncertainty.  They are going to need God’s presence in a new way.  They are going to need the Holy Spirit to fill them with the gift of his wisdom and confidence in that gift.  They will be strengthened and guided in the task of witnessing to these amazing events and the call that comes from them and through them.

Risen Lord,

you promised to strengthen your apostles for their work.

Pour out your Spirit upon the whole Church today

that we may be faithful witnesses to your gospel.  Amen.

Sing to the Lord, bless his name

All        tell of his salvation from day to day.  Alleluia.
