7 - Jesus appears to the disciples

O sing to the Lord a new song

All        for he has done marvellous things.  Alleluia.

Bible reading – Luke 24:36-43

While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’* 37They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. 38He said to them, ‘Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.’ 40And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.* 41While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, ‘Have you anything here to eat?’ 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43and he took it and ate in their presence.

They still haven’t got it.  They are confused and it is beginning to make their heads hurt.  The emotional rollercoaster just will not settle with this uncharted territory.  Into this confusion stands Jesus proclaiming ‘peace’.  They feel far from peaceful.  They are very disturbed.  His arrival just makes them panic and he has to make it very clear that this is not a ghost story.  Ghosts don’t eat fish.  Yet he isn’t the same as he was.  This isn’t merely a resuscitated corpse either.  Jesus posed some puzzlers while they travelled with him and he taught, but they are going to take a little while longer to work this one out.

Risen Lord,

you stood among your disciples

and proclaimed peace.

Quieten our disturbed hearts

and set us ablaze with your love.  Amen.

Sing to the Lord, bless his name

All        tell of his salvation from day to day.  Alleluia.
