4 - The angel appears to the women

O sing to the Lord a new song

All        for he has done marvellous things.  Alleluia.

Bible reading - Matthew 28:5-8

But the angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. 6He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he* lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples, “He has been raised from the dead,* and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.” This is my message for you.’ 8So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

One of the wonders of the resurrection is that it is revealed to the women before the male Apostles.  They are sent with a message for the men and that makes them Apostles to the Apostles.  This is remarkable because their testimony was not regarded as being worth as much as that of their male counterparts.  Just as Jesus’ birth was announced to shepherds before kings and the wise, so his death is revealed to the women first.  It is revealed first to those who stood at the foot of the cross and stayed with Jesus while he died.  It is also the women who had gone to carry out the last rites of burial, so they were actually in the right place to receive the revelation, though if Jesus has so chosen he could have appeared to anyone else before they got there, but he didn’t.

Risen Lord,

you chose those of lowest status

to reveal your resurrection to first.

Open our minds to hear the small voices today

carrying news of great worth.  Amen.

Sing to the Lord, bless his name

All        tell of his salvation from day to day.  Alleluia.
