2 - Mary Magdalene finds the empty tomb

O sing to the Lord a new song

All        for he has done marvellous things.  Alleluia.

Bible reading - John 20:1-2

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’

We are not told why Mary went to the tomb.  She drifts there in a daze as so many do when lost in grief.  Perhaps she went to complete the rites of burial that there wasn’t time for on the Friday.  She is clearly not expecting to find the tomb empty and certainly not to find Jesus alive.  Her first assumption is distraught and obvious.  The body has been stolen!  She doesn’t even look inside - the stone having been removed is enough evidence.  We can almost hear her scream as she runs to find the other disciples and blurt out her nightmarish message.  This is surely the final indignity.

Risen Lord,

you call us by name

and our hearts rejoice in your praise.

Transform our vision to be expectant with your glory.  Amen.

Sing to the Lord, bless his name

All        tell of his salvation from day to day.  Alleluia.
