13 - Jesus is taken down from the cross

We adore you O Christ and we bless you

All        because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

Bible Reading - Mark 15:42-45

When evening had come, and since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, 43Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44Then Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead for some time. 45When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph.

Jesus dies relatively quickly.  They don’t need to finish him off to prevent upsetting the religious customs, as if the preceding stations cause no offence to devotion!  The body is received by his mother and supporters.  The heart wrenching scene of the mother cradling her dead son’s body is almost too much to bear.  The fallen hero is treated with dignity. His body will not be left for the birds to devour.  Broken friends and family carry him away for a hurried burial.

Lord Jesus,

we give you thanks and praise

for your lifeless body was held and mourned.

Be with all who grieve

and whose hearts ache with sorrow.  Amen.

            O Saviour of the world

who by your cross and precious blood redeemed us

All        Save us and help us we humbly beseech you, O Lord.
