9 - Jesus falls the third time

            We adore you O Christ and we bless you

All        because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

Bible Reading – Isaiah 53:5

But he was wounded for our transgressions,
   crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the punishment that made us whole,
   and by his bruises we are healed.

To fall once would be enough; twice pitiful.  The third fall, especially given that he has help, shows that they have broken him and are destroying him.  The king who rode triumphant on the donkey has been utterly humiliated and crushed.  The ruthlessness of this execution is decisive.  The aim is obliteration and a determined message to all who watch: don’t mess with the powers that be.  Taking up the cross is no spiritual analogy.  It can bring literal breaking.

Lord Jesus,

we give you thanks and praise

for you became weak in order to redeem the world.

Raise all who have broken under the strain of their cross.  Amen.

            O Saviour of the world

who by your cross and precious blood redeemed us

All        Save us and help us we humbly beseech you, O Lord.
