7 - Jesus falls the second time

            We adore you O Christ and we bless you

All        because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

 Bible Reading – Isaiah 53:3

He was despised and rejected by others;
   a man of suffering* and acquainted with infirmity;
and as one from whom others hide their faces*
   he was despised, and we held him of no account.

Reflection

The weight of his cross and the energy required for this task is too much for Jesus.  Not even Simon’s help has prevented this.  He falls again.  His body is reaching the limits of its endurance and each fall shows the humanity being stretched to and beyond breaking point.  We are not looking at a detached superhero here, someone who remains inviolable and untouched by it all.  Does this silence the crowd and bring cries for mercy or are they largely unmoved as his executioners are?  Does Simon get a sharp reprimand too for also having difficulty carrying the weight of Jesus' cross?  Those who accompany the dying often stumble themselves and those who seek to support someone going through a vale of misery or a task that is breaking share some of that exhaustion.

Lord Jesus,

we give you thanks and praise

for in your passion we see the extent of your love for us.

Be with all at the point of breaking.  Amen.

Response
