4 - Jesus meets his mother

We adore you O Christ and we bless you

All        because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

Bible Reading – Luke 2:22, 25, 34-35

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon;* this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 34Then Simeon* blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’

Does it help to come face to face with your mother on the way to your death?  He is not alone and she can do this one last thing for him: accompany him in his final hours.  It is torture to see him go through this.  That sword Simeon spoke of in the temple so many years before at his presentation is piercing her very soul and nothing can dull its pain.  No parent wants to see their child die before them.  Many do, in infancy, through warfare and violence, through tragedy and illness; sometimes because of what they have done and sometimes because of others’ hatred.  In the back of her mind where does Mary place her son right now?  “What have you done?”  Anger or sorrow, perhaps?  Defeat that she is unable to protect?  These tears are the rawest.

Lord Jesus,

we give you thanks and praise

for in your mother we see a model of devotion.

Fill us with your grace

that we may follow in your steps in passion and glory.  Amen.

            O Saviour of the world

who by your cross and precious blood redeemed us

All        Save us and help us we humbly beseech you, O Lord.
