1 - Pilate condemns Jesus to death

We adore you O Christ and we bless you

All        because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

Bible Reading - Mark 15:14-15

Pilate asked them, ‘Why, what evil has he done?’ But they shouted all the more, ‘Crucify him!’ 15So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified.

Pilate doesn’t particularly want to condemn Jesus.  He is curious about him, but doesn’t really care if he lives or dies.  The moment of judgement comes and the uncertainty is over.  The words of sentence have a force that hits Jesus in the stomach.  His breathing changes and for a moment everything around him is a blur and echoey.  He is going to die!  The realisation is a stark moment for any one and one we will all face in some form one day.  He has been preparing for this but when the moment comes relief and terror mingle.  The journey ahead is one of mockery and hatred as well as compassion and last moments with those he loves.  It will be an endurance test beyond comparison.

Lord Jesus,

we give you thanks and praise

for you faced Pilate and was subjected to injustice.

Be with those who sit in judgement on others

and all recently sentenced by courts.  Amen.

            O Saviour of the world

who by your cross and precious blood redeemed us

All        Save us and help us we humbly beseech you, O Lord.
