1 - Jesus in agony in the Garden of Gethsemane

We adore you O Christ and we bless you

All        because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

Bible Reading - Mark 14:32-36

They went to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ 33He took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be distressed and agitated. 34And he said to them, ‘I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake.’ 35And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36He said, ‘Abba,* Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want.’

What did the disciples expect when Jesus took them into the Garden after the meal?  He has already surprised them with talk of bread as his body, wine being his blood.  He has spoken of betrayal and now they are getting some fresh air.  But for Jesus it is far from fresh.  There is a deep struggle going on within him.  This is the moment when he has to decide if he is resolute and will await the arrival of confrontation or will withdraw to safety as he has done before because then was not the time.  “Remove this cup”!  The man does not want what is to come but he knows he must embrace it.  Now is the hour.  This is true bravery - he is afraid and yet stands his ground.  God’s will be done: the mystery of the Passion must follow.

Lord Jesus,

we give you thanks and praise

for in the garden

you struggled with accepting the sacrificial path.

Sustain us in our struggles

and strengthen our resolve to do you will.  Amen.

             O Saviour of the world

who by your cross and precious blood redeemed us

All        Save us and help us we humbly beseech you, O Lord.
