7 - Jesus carries the cross

We adore you O Christ and we bless you

All        because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

Bible Reading - Mark 15:20

After mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

In case he was in any doubt of what was in store, he has to carry his own cross.  It is like execution victims being forced to dig their own graves.  It is a mental torture.  If he refuses, what can they do to him?  More beatings, kill him quicker?  That he does this implies he is either too weak to resist any more or believes a last minute reprieve is possible so had better cooperate just in case.  Does God really intend this to go to the end?  Will legions of angels come to his aid in the nick of time and remove the cup he agonised over in the garden?  Perhaps he is resolute; this must be.  Whatever the case is, in carrying the cross he is embracing death.

Lord Jesus,

we give you thanks and praise

for you carried your cross

and embraced the consequences of our sin.

Give us courage to take up our cross and follow you.  Amen.

            O Saviour of the world

who by your cross and precious blood redeemed us

All        Save us and help us we humbly beseech you, O Lord.
