6 - Jesus is scourged and crowned with thorns

We adore you O Christ and we bless you

All        because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

Bible Reading - Mark 15:17-19

And they clothed him in a purple cloak; and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on him. 18And they began saluting him, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ 19They struck his head with a reed, spat upon him, and knelt down in homage to him.

Reflection

As if he doesn’t have enough to cope with cruel and desensitised soldiers dehumanize him.  The beating is severe and weakens him.  The crown of thorns is a particularly vicious attack causing excruciating pain.  The mock royal robes spiteful and ridiculing.  He is being made into a political mockery too.  How many anonymous people have faced such humiliation and twisted cruelty?  What makes some so cynical and brutal that they can inflict such torture on another human being?  Are they haunted at night by the screams of their victims?  Have they lost their own humanity as they seek to strip Jesus of his?

Lord Jesus,

we give you thanks and praise

for you endured such abuse for our sake.

Be with all victims of violence

and whose dignity is violated.  Amen.
