4 - Peter denies Jesus

We adore you O Christ and we bless you

All        because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

Bible Reading - Mark 14:72

At that moment the cock crowed for the second time. Then Peter remembered that Jesus had said to him, ‘Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.’ And he broke down and wept.

Meanwhile outside, close enough to observe proceedings but far enough away for safety, Peter keeps watch.  He doesn’t know what to do and doesn’t know what he can do.  He is overwhelmingly out numbered and Jesus does not seem to be calling for an armed uprising.  Three times he is challenged by servants who notice far more than any one gives them credit for.  Three times he denies any connection to Jesus with increasing force.  Each denial sounds like a betrayal and when the cock crows twice, he feels convicted and is deeply ashamed.  Perhaps now is not his time to embrace the cup, but it will come and the memory of the shame of denial will become steel in his veins when he needs it.

Lord Jesus,

we give you thanks and praise

for you stood alone before hostile inquisitors.

Hear the cry of those who are isolated in their stand

and strengthen those who falter in their support.  Amen.

            O Saviour of the world

who by your cross and precious blood redeemed us

All        Save us and help us we humbly beseech you, O Lord.
