14 - Jesus is laid in the tomb

We adore you O Christ and we bless you

All        because by your holy cross

            you have redeemed the world.

Bible Reading - Mark 15:46

Then Joseph* bought a linen cloth, and taking down the body,* wrapped it in the linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. He then rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.

Jesus dies relatively quickly.  Broken friends and family carry him away for a hurried burial.  Holy Saturday, the day between Good Friday and Easter Day has a great importance.  It is the day that Jesus is simply dead and lying in the cold earth.  The coldness and emptiness of death is held at this tomb.  The long silence tells us that death is not "nothing at all"; it is heart breaking and disrupts us.  Our generation has great difficulty holding this great silence and loss.  Jesus has gone to the place of the dead so that he may complete his work there and then we are in for a surprise!

Lord Jesus,

we give you thanks and praise

for you plunged the depths of loss and despair.

May all who have died

be brought to the table of your mercy.  Amen.

            O Saviour of the world

who by your cross and precious blood redeemed us

All        Save us and help us we humbly beseech you, O Lord.
