STAT 290: Quantitative Methods I (Online Class)

Tech Requirements for online course STAT 290:
To be able to complete the online class successfully, at a minimum you will need a personal computer, access to the internet, a webcam , and a microphone to take online exams.
Weekly Zoom Office Hours (Fridays 10:30 am to 11:30 am VIA ZOOM).

Textbook:
Commerce 290: Introduction to Quantitative Decision Making Some selected chapters from Spreadsheet Modeling and Applications, Albright and Winston, Thompson Learning Inc, 2005; and Quantitative Methods for Business 9th ed, Anderson, Sweeney and Williams, Thompson, 2004.

Course Overview:
This course provides students with an introduction to operations research. Linear programming models are used to formulate a variety of problems of optimal allocation of resources. Complex decision problems are analyzed via simulation and include an introduction to probability and statistics to deal with uncertainty.
Lectures:
You are encouraged to attend lecture and they are not mandatary. The fundamental concepts and examples are presented in lecture.
Lecture will be recorded and remained available for the rest of the semester.
Weekly lecture time - Fridays, 9:30 am to 10:30 am online via ZOOM.
Evaluation of students
Final course grades will be based on the following five components with weights shown in parentheses:
Quizzes (25%):
1. You will have 6 - 10 quizzes given in the semester; but only the best 5 will be used.
2. All quizzes are open books/notes, and they lasts 4 - 7 days.
3. Cheating in a test can result a zero in Quizzes_and_Class_Participaion!
Class Participation (10%):
Each student needs to hold at least 4 face-to-face meetings with the instructor (Via Zoom or meet your instructor at Coquitlam College).
One in the first two weeks.
One at the end of the semester tied to the final assessment.
Two additional meetings during the term (You are encouraged to use Weekly Zoom Office HOURS).
If you meet the above all requirements (without any sent email of reminders by instructor), you will earn 7% of Class Participation automatically .
The preparation of ID Checking (especially the first time, midterm assessment, and the final assessment). Prefer ID - COQUITLAM Student ID (driver license and passport are also OK!)
Excel Projects (20%)
A case study will be provided and you need to convert the real-life business problems into their mathematical models. And use Excel (Solver) to find the optimal solutions for the applications.
Midterm examination (20%):
There will be one midterm exam during the course. The midterm exam will be on WEEK 7.
Remember to bring your photo ID and a scanned image of picture ID in the cell phone is not allowed!
We use Zoom to invigilate the exam.
An oral test will follow and some correctly answered questions (or simplified version of similar questions) will be asked again.
Final Assessment (Final comprehensive examination) (25%):
1. The final exam is a cumulative closed books/notes exam.
2. The final exam will cover all the material taught in the course and the final exam date is TBD.
3. Remember to bring your photo ID and a scanned image of picture ID in the cell phone is not allowed!
4. An oral test will follow and some correctly answered questions (or simplified version of similar questions) will be asked again.
