Glossary

distro -- IT vernacular for a Linux operating system (OS). It is a shortened version of the term "distribution".

graphical user interface (GUI) -- a visual way of interacting with a computer using items such as windows, icons, and menus, used by most modern operating systems.

Linux -- an operating system, based on UNIX, that runs on many different hardware platforms and whose source code is open and available to the public; originally created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds.

open source software -- computer software with its source code made available to study, change, and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose; open-source software may be developed in a collaborative public manner.

terminal -- an interface in which you can type and execute text based commands.
