Music Therapy

For the longest time I believed that listening to certain types of music, certain musical modes (raaga) induced very specific responses in the body. That is what I was told. That is what most people I knew believed.

It is still what many people believe.

Listening to music is like looking a perfect plate of food. You look, you smell and you walk away satisfied.

If you are hungry, you need to eat. Otherwise just looking at the food will be nothing more than a happy memory. It does nothing to nourish your body.

For music to be therapeutic, you need to understand what you are listening to. You need to study it, know every nuance and then observe your reactions to it. It is intense. It is time consuming. It is like learning to taste wine.

When you finally get it, nothing brings your more ecstasy than the stroke of music on your soul.
