Stamford ‘A’ team’s return to the Lincolnshire Men’s League proved a painful experience when they were beaten 77-64 at home on Sunday in their opening fixture by old rivals Boston ‘A’.
This followed the Stamford ‘B’ team battling hard against Boston’s second string 24 hours earlier but without reward.
Under the new captaincy of Neil Wright, the ‘A’ team embraced the original format of regional north and south leagues after withdrawing last season. But they found the visitors in no mood to give them an easy passage, fielding a top strength team determined to challenge in April for a spot in the play-offs.
Stamford started well and led by three overall at the halfway stage in this scheduled 21-end encounter, but Boston gradually adapted to a faster-paced carpet, particularly when the rinks of Jon Earl and Kevin Vinter lost their initiative after leading 17-5 and 17-9 respectively.
Earl’s rink eventually claimed the only winning rink, but the 14 shots conceded in four ends, including a devastating seven count on the 18th, proved crucial to the match. Vinter's rink salvaged a draw after conceding nine shots in the closing stages.
Elsewhere, Stamford’s 18-year-old England junior international skip Owen Aspinall found veteran Martin Tomlin’s rink a handful in a run of seven singles from the 13th end to lose 19-12, while 4-count concessions on the 12th and 14th ends proved key to Paul Bailey’s return.

Elsewhere, with David Jibb making a promising debut, Martin Hewitt’s rink stuttered mid-match, as did Dave Oakey’s four, though they rallied towards the end.
