Microbiological laboratory is a part of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Novosibirsk Tuberculosis Research Institute" Ministry of Health of Russian Federation (NTRI). The laboratory is located in a separate building, total laboratory area is 614.4 m2. Laboratory provides supervision, methodological assistance and trainings for laboratory staff from 104 TB laboratories in Siberian and Far Eastern Federal districts, 22 of those are performing DST for MTB.  It is also providing methodological support to 896 laboratories of general medical network (only for fluorescence microscopy and Ziehl-Nielsen) in Siberian and Far Eastern Federal districts.

Structure and organization

The laboratory includes two divisions: bacteriological laboratory and molecular-genetic laboratory. Bacteriological laboratory performs microscopic and cultural studies, bacteriological tests to monitor the microbiological state of the environment (sanitary microbiology) and also culture for nonspecific microflora.

Services provided by the SRL

1. A full range of microbiological and molecular genetic methods for TB diagnosis and follow-up during the chemotherapy in NTRI patients. Identification of MTB isolates by molecular genetic methods, the method of mass spectrometry. DST for the first and second line drugs.

2. Performing of reference microscopic, bacteriological, molecular genetic studies in a framework of tuberculosis.

3. The organizational and methodological assistance in the organization of TB laboratory services in supervised regions.

4. Conducting of trainings on TB laboratory diagnosis and biosafety for laboratory staff of TB services from Siberian and Far Eastern Federal districts.

5. External quality control in a framework of TB laboratory diagnosis.

TB diagnostics available

1. Microscopic methods: light microscopy with the Ziehl-Neelsen color / fluorescence microscopy with fluorochrome color.

2. The culture diagnostics: solid egg media / liquid culture medium in the system Bactec MGIT.

3. Drug sensitivity test: a method of absolute concentrations for the first and second line drugs / proportion method in a liquid medium in Bactec MGIT system for the first-line drugs, pyrazinamide, second-line drugs / modified method of proportions with tablet cultivation (Sensititre MYCOTB, RAPMYCO, SLOMYCO )

4. Molecular-genetic methods: Cartridge technique GeneXpert MTB / RIF; hybridization on strips (HAIN species identification, identification of non-tuberculous mycobacteria, DST for the first and second line drugs); Real-time PCR (DNA detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the identification of resistance to isoniazid, rifampicin, ofloxacin).

5. Mass spectrometry for non-tuberculous mycobacteria species identification.

6. Whole genome sequencing.
