Our History:

Since 1982

It may come as a surprise that in the China administered Hong Kong there is still an opportunity to do live firing with our traditional weapons. The Swiss Rifle Association has been established in 1982 and since then we have been organizing shooting events, in the earlier years together with a unit of the British Army, the Queen’s Gurkha Signals, and since 1998 we have an opportunity to compete with former members of the Royal Hong Kong Regiment, now the RHKR Sport Shooting Association.

History of the Swiss Rifle Association of Hong Kong

In 1972 a friendly shooting competition was initiated by high ranking officers of the Swiss Army visiting Hong Kong, and members of the British Army. Initially, only pistols and rifles were used for the competition. During a visit to Switzerland British officers discovered the Swiss crossbow and soon thereafter the crossbow was integrated into the shooting competition, which carried (and still does) the military code name “Operation Mercury”. Ten years after the first Mercury, some of the Swiss felt that the brave men and women in Hong Kong could participate in the Operation Mercury. So, they established the Swiss Rifle Association of Hong Kong in 1982. Until 1996 we had monthly events including pistol and small bore shooting on Stonecutters Island, and two big annual events, the Compulsory Shoot and the Operation Mercury.

With the departure of the British the monthly events were dropped, but the two annual events are still taking place in a somewhat different form. As the People’s Liberation Army does not show any interest in our activities, we were lucky to have found new friends in the RHKR Sport Shooting Association. This association of members of the former Hong Kong Regiment, which was dissolved in 1996, was granted a 50m shooting range in the New Territories, Twice per year they invite us to a friendly shooting competition on their range. We are shooting live rounds on Swiss Army Assault Rifles 90, which have been adapted for civilian use, at a distance of 50 meters, but on 1:6 reduced targets. We are, nevertheless, authorized to certify the annual Compulsory Program in your Swiss military service record!

Although every shooting event is a serious matter, where safety is always the top priority, it goes together with traditional Swiss sausages, meat loaf, and cold soft drinks. A great opportunity to meet with other Swiss residents of Hong Kong, but also with the members of the Regiment.

Active Membership is open for a joining fee of HK$ 1,000.- and subsequent HK$ 600.- per annum for individuals, and Corporate Membership at HK$ 1,000.- for companies. In exceptional cases non-Swiss Army trained persons can become members, provided that two existing Active Member are acting as sponsors, and provided that they attend a bi-annually held training camp. Companies have the right to delegate two (Swiss Army trained!) employees to any of our shooting events. There is also an opportunity to show your support for our activities by becoming an Associated Member for HK$ 400.- (or CHF 50.-) for individuals, or for CHF 200.- for Shooting Clubs in Switzerland.
