THOMAS & UBER CUP : EASY FOR CHINA, EARLY TEST FOR MALAYSIA

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (espnstar.com) - Malaysia’s title credentials in the Thomas Cup will be put to an early test after they were drawn in Group B on Wednesday together with South Korea and England for the Thomas Cup finals in Jakarta.

Defending champions China have relatively easy groups while hosts Indonesia suffered mixed fortunes at the conclusion of the draw ceremony in Jakarta.

China will have Canada and Nigeria in Group A of the men’s world team championship while Indonesia have Germany and Thailand for company in Group D. Denmark, Japan and New Zealand complete the cast for Group C.

China is the No. 1 seed in the Thomas Cup followed by Indonesia, Malaysia and Denmark respectively.

In the Uber Cup, the women’s world team championship, China have been drawn in Group A with Germany and United States of America while hosts Indonesia have to contend with world No.2 Japan and the Netherlands for company in Group D.

Group B comprise South Korea, Hong Kong and South Africa while Malaysia head Group C. The other members of Group C are Denmark and New Zealand.

The finals will take place at the Istora Senayan Stadium in Jakarta on May 11-18.

The winners of each group will qualify for the quarter-finals while play-offs will be conducted for the second and third placed teams from each group to determine the rest of the quarter-finalists.
