Coalition for the Homeless

The Coalition for the Homeless is the nation's oldest advocacy and direct service organization helping homeless men, women, and children. We are dedicated to the principle that decent shelter, sufficient food, affordable housing, and the chance to work for a living wage are fundamental rights in a civilized society. Since our inception in 1981, the Coalition has worked through litigation, public education, and direct services to ensure that these goals are realized.

The Coalition provides vital services to over 3,500 New Yorkers each day. We use this frontline experience to advocate for long-term public solutions to mass homelessness that are more humane and cost-effective than current government programs.

The overarching goal of the Coalition is to move beyond warehousing homeless people in shelters by promoting and offering programs that help them regain their dignity and independence. Our 12 direct service programs are designed to engage homeless people, stabilize them, and transition them to self-sufficiency.

Youth Services

Through its Youth Services program, Coalition for the Homeless aims to break the cycle of poverty and provide homeless youth with tools to overcome the obstacles they face.  The Youth Services program serves more than 400 homeless children who reside in temporary housing facilities each year. They offer children a safe and consistent space to develop friendships, to learn and explore, and to reach their potentials.

Camp Homeward Bound

Camp Homeward Bound offers three 16-day sessions at its beautiful location in Harriman State Park and serves 300 homeless children from city shelters each season. The mission of Camp Homeward Bound is to provide homeless children with a respite from the chaos of homelessness and the opportunity to shed the often-confining labels which relatives, case workers, neighbors, peers, and teachers may have given them.

Bound For Success

The Coalition's Bound for Success Program provides homeless children with a respite from their chaotic lives by giving them the opportunity to learn and play in a safe, nurturing environment within the shelters. The Bound for Success After School programming offers a safe and structured environment for the children to complete their homework, receive tutoring help, and make friends. The Summer Day Camp offers children living in the shelters the chance to have a fun-filled and educational summer.
