Quotes & Ponderings on human nature, self development and (dis)order...

From Arthur Janov, The New Primal Scream (1990):

"The number one killer in the world today is neither cancer nor heart disease. It is repression. Unconsciousness is the real danger, and neurosis the hidden killer. [...]. What is being repressed, by and large, are needs and feelings. That is why feeling early pain, by weakening repression, allows someone to become feeling again. This is what gives back meaning and allows one to finally experience joy, beauty and colouration of life. It means unifying the selves and making someone organic, integrated and whole.  [...]

Neurosis is a disease of feeling. Feeling is the problem of today. Again and again we encounter people who cannot feel, can't get much out of life, and believe existence is all grey and dull. For them it is, for their repressed pain keeps them in search of magic, a belief system that will automatically transform their life into something meaningful. The best I can offer is to transform someone into himself.  [...]

No longer is the power in the hands of the doctor. The patient who feels always knows more about himself and what is best for him therapeutically than the doctor. No more insights dominated by wise men. Those will arise from the patient who feels."

From Scottish psychologist R. D. Laing:

"Insanity - A perfectly rational response to an insane world.

Schizophrenia cannot be understood without understanding despair.

The experience and behavior that gets labeled schizophrenic is a special strategy that a person invents in order to live in an unliveable situation."

Sigmund Freud:

"Patients are nothing but riff-raff. The only useful purposes they serve are to help us earn a living and to provide learning material. In any case, we cannot help them."

Dr. Peter Raabe - Philosophical Counselor:

"Mental illnesses simply are problematic beliefs, values, fears, assumptions, and so on; they have no physical existence."

Dr. Jane Alexandra Cook:

"The NZ (mental) health system gives the appearance, but prevents the delivery, of care.

Psychiatric drugs and ECT imprison the self in the abyss, and those who prescribe them are sadists. The Mental Health Act is simply a license to exploit and abuse with impunity. "

Why is Philosophy the cure for mental turmoil & disorder? Because it is also the cause...

Some Corner-Stones of our philosophical, mythological, and religious heritage:

    Plato:

It is only males who are created directly by the gods and are given souls…In this situation, obviously it is only men who are complete human beings and can hope for ultimate fulfilment; the best a woman can hope for is to become a man (Timaeus, 90e)

    Aristotle:

Now a boy is like a woman in form, and the woman is as it were, an impotent male, for it is through a certain incapacity that  the female is female…what the male contributes to generation is the form and the efficient cause, while the female contributes the material (On the Generation of Animals, 20)

    Christianity's Gospel of Thomas:

114 Simon Peter said to them, "Make Mary leave us, for females don't deserve life." 2 Jesus said,

"Look, I will guide her to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit resembling you males.

3 For every female who makes herself male will enter the domain of Heaven."

    Buddhism's Lotus Sutra

So profound is Amida's great compassion

That, manifesting inconceivable Buddha-wisdom,

The Buddha established the Vow of transformation into men,

Thereby vowing to enable woman to attain Buddhahood.

And from venerated 4th century Buddhist scholar Asangha:

Completely perfected Buddhas are not women. And why? Precisely because a Bodhisattva .... has completely abandoned the state of womanhood. Ascending to the most excellent throne of enlightenment, he is never again reborn as a woman. All women are by nature full of defilement and of weak intelligence. And not by one who is by nature full of defilement and of weak intelligence, is completely perfected Buddhahood attained.

    The ancient Hindu/Sanskrit Mahabharata:

There is nothing else that is more sinful than women. Verily, women, are the root of all faults. That is, certainly known to thee, O Narada! [...] The destroyer, the deity of wind, death, the nether legions, the equine mouth that roves through the ocean, vomiting ceaseless flames of fire, the sharpness of the razor, virulent poison, the snake, and Fire--all these exist in a state of union in women.

St. Tertullian - The founder of Western Theology

You [woman] are the devil’s gateway: you are the unsealer of that (forbidden) tree: you are the first deserter of the divine law: you are she who persuaded him whom the devil was not valiant enough to attack. You destroyed so easily God’s image, man. On account of your desert – that is, death – even the Son of God had to die. (De Cultu Feminarum, 1869)

    Islamic Law from the Qu'ran

(5.6) And if ye are unclean, purify yourselves. And if ye are sick or on a journey, or one of you cometh from the closet, or ye have had contact with women, and ye find not water, then go to clean, high ground and rub your faces and your hands with some of it. [...]  (2:223) Your wives are as a tilth unto you, so approach your tilth when or how ye will. [...] (53:27) Those who believe not in the Hereafter, name the angels with female names. [ie. angels are male only]

      and the Ihya Ulum Ed-Din

A woman is like a private part. When she comes out of her house, the devil holds her high. (p. 2.43)

Muhammad said, "A woman is the string of the devil. (p. 3.87)

Māori Spiritual Beliefs (as recounted by ethnologists Elsdon Best and William Goldie):

The wairua (spirit) of a child is, according to several of my authorities, implanted by the
male parent during coition. [...] [I]n a general sense a male is tapu and a female is noa, or
common, i.e., void of tapu. (Best, 1906, p. 3)

The whare o aitua means the female procreative organs (tara, tore, &c.), and is also applied
to Mother Earth, because her children (man) die and are taken back to her bosom – i.e., buried;
also because of the mysterious primal curse of sex – female – which is ancient beyond
compare [...]. All troubles, misfortune, sickness, come from the whare o aitua (whence man
enters the world) – i.e., from the female sex. (Goldie,
1904, p. 6)

From an interview in Sex, Metaphysics and Madness: Unveiling the Grail on Human Nature and Mental Disorder:

'So the identities that you might use, that would describe your life, such as sportsperson, mother, wife, counsellor....would you include the identity of ‘woman’?'

'I wouldn’t, no, I wouldn’t.'

Philosopher Luce Irigaray, from This Sex Which Is Not One:

In this new matrix of History, in which man begets man as his own likeness, wives, daughters, and sisters have value only in that they serve as the possibility of, and potential benefit in, relations among men. The use of and traffic in women subtend and uphold the reign of masculine hom(m)o-sexuality, even while they maintain that hom(m)o-sexuality in speculations, mirror games, identifications, and more or less rivalrous appropriations, which defer its real practice.

[W]ithout the exploitation of women, what would become of the social order? What modifications would it undergo if women left behind their condition as commodities - subject to being produced, consumed, valorized, circulated, and so on, by men alone - and took part in elaborating and carrying out exchanges? Not by reproducing, by copying, the "phallocratic" models that have the force of law today, but by socializing in a different way the relation to nature, matter, the body, language, and desire.

[W]omen merely "equal" to men would be "like them", therefore not women.

Philosophy as Therapy & Prevention: 'A Way Out' - Reclaiming, Being & Expressing One's Original, Wholly Integrated Self

    Epicurus:

Philosophy is "therapy of the soul".

"Empty is the argument of the philosopher which does not relieve any human suffering."

    Luce Irigaray (This Sex)

Women, stop trying. You have been taught that you were property, private or public, belonging to one man or all. To family, tribe, State, even a Republic. That therein lay your pleasure. And that, unless you gave in to man's, or men's, desires, you would not know sexual pleasure. That pleasure was, for you, always tied to pain, but that such was your nature. If you disobeyed, you were the cause of your own unhappiness.

But, curiously enough, your nature has always been defined by men, and men alone. Your eternal instructors, in social science, religion, or sex. Your moral or immoral teachers. They are the ones who have taught you your needs or desires. You haven't yet had a word to say on the subject.

So ask yourselves just what "nature" is speaking along their theoretical or practical lines. And if you find yourselves attracted by something other than what their laws, rules, and rituals prescribe, realize that - perhaps - you have come across your "nature."

Don't even go looking for that alibi. Do what comes to mind, do what you like: without "reasons," without "valid
motives," without ''justification." [...]

How can I tell you that there is no possible evil in your sexual pleasure - you who are a stranger to good(s). That the fault only comes about when they strip you of your openness and close you up, marking you with signs of possession; then they can break in, commit infractions and transgressions and play other games with the law. Games in which they - and you? - speculate on your whiteness. If we play along, we let ourselves be abused, destroyed. [...]

How can I say it? That we are women from the start. That we don't have to be turned into women by them, labeled by them, made holy and profaned by them. That that has always already happened, without their efforts. [...]

Wait. My blood is coming back. From their senses. It's warm inside us again. Among us. Their words are emptying out, becoming bloodless, Dead skins. While our lips are growing red again. They're stirring, moving, they want to speak. You mean ...? What? Nothing. Everything. Yes. Be patient. You'll say it all. Begin with what you feel, right here, right now. Our all will come. [...]

Don't cry. One day we'll manage to say ourselves. And what we say will be even lovelier than our tears. Wholly fluent.

Spirogenetics - A new evidence-based theory of self development and mental (dis)order:

Main tenets:

Phallo-logical philosophy, religion, mythology and language deny women - i.e. all natural sexual female beings - their own whole essence/form, and thus define them as the de-formed, unbounded 'voracious female' that, in enflaming Adam/man's desire to submit to Satan, is the 'hole' that is the eternal source/gateway of evil.

If we don't have a persisting form - of our own or as part of another's form - we cannot see, know or exist to ourselves, or be seen or known (to exist) by others. In a patriarchal system that denies the female essence/form, for a woman to exist in her own/others' eyes, she must reject her real, formless sexual female self/body, and either boyishly imitate, or be the ideal feminine aspect of, the male form. Either way a woman reshapes herself into a false, fabricated, everyday made-up form that she hopes others will love, admire and desire.

What happens if/when this false form begins to unravel, fragment or collapse? Loss of form means loss of self and an existential crisis which so-called mental disorder attempts to overcome. What we understand as mental 'disorder', is actually an inner or intra-psychic pursuit of 'order' or a perfect, lovable FORM as a means of ongoing existence.

So, mental (dis)order does not have a genetic, neurological, hormonal, psychological, or social cause. These are only its symptoms. Its cause lies in the phallo-logical language and concepts of all philosophies, religions and mythologies that deny an essence/form to - and thus demonize and dismember - real woman and her sexual female body.

It is not the ('bad, fat, uncontrollable') body that is the anorexic, bulimic, obese, anxious, depressed woman's nemesis. It is her real sexual female self
