Heavy rain falling in white sheets amid blustery winds of Typhoon Rammasun (Glenda)

posted Jul 15, 2014, 7:43 PM by speckonthe web   [ updated Jul 15, 2014, 7:48 PM ]

White sheets of falling water and big blustery winds from Typhoon Rammasun (Glenda) continue on the morning of Wednesday July 16, following intensification in the hours after midnight.

This is definitely NOT a non-event. Due to the heavy population density in the strike area, many will be made homeless and damage will be in the millions of dollars.

The typhoon is right above us. There will be pockets of relative calm, and then we will have to wait for the whole process to go into reverse as the eye and then the rest of the typhoon passes over us. Only after that will everyone be able to take a full survey of the damage.

Quiet calm in the morning before Typhoon Rammasun (Glenda)

Eerily quiet on Tuesday morning July 15 - truly the calm before the storm. Not even the fronds of the coconut palms are moving.

Let's hope Typhoon Rammasun (Glenda) becomes a non-event.

Typhoon Rammasun (Glenda) bound for Manila direct hit

posted Jul 14, 2014, 7:10 AM by speckonthe web   [ updated Jul 15, 2014, 8:00 PM ]

Looks like Typhoon Rammasun (named as Typhoon Glenda by PAGASA in the Philippines) is bound to make a direct hit over the most populous region in the Philippines - which will include Metro Manila - in fact one of the most populous regions in the world.

There will be a lot of disruption due to the density of population and the poor standard of infrastructure. The next 36 hours will see how severely the nation will be affected.

Rainy season beginning...?

posted Jun 3, 2014, 12:41 AM by speckonthe web   [ updated Jun 3, 2014, 1:50 AM ]

The first morning rain of the year fell today. (Been a while since my last post!)

I guess that since June has just begun, it is now the start of the rainy season, as yearly rainfall usually peaks in July.

It'll be a welcome relief from the searing local "summer" temperatures in May, April and even March. But rain can obliterate everything here and bring the whole city to a stop...a tantalizing yet dangerous double-edged sword.

Little One is not little anymore - but still a midget

posted Dec 24, 2010, 9:33 AM by speckonthe web   [ updated Dec 24, 2010, 10:07 AM ]

I realized last month that Little One is big now. Not that she's big in size, because she's still a scrawny little thing... But now she can reason in words, she can pretend (startlingly convincing at times), and she now often speaks in five-word sentences with little effort and we're not surprised whenever she utters sentences of more than five.
Her mind has started on its way towards sophistication... but in no way is she any kind of prodigy. Far from it, the concepts in the schoolbooks she gets tend to bounce off her head and she has little patience or perseverance for it (I think her teachers are quite frustrated with her as well) - and even now, I still sometimes can't understand what she's trying to communicate even though I can hear each and every word that she says. Anyway, she is always creative and filled with fun, enthusiasm and frequent naughtiness, whining and crying - a perfect creation of imperfection placed within our hands. She's definitely going forwards and not back, and - even if there are plenty of kids ahead of her - we're proud enough with that.

More online games for young kids - draw then play

Have endless meaningless fun by drawing geometric objects and obstacles on the playing field and creating circle/bubbles, then have fun watching the game's physics engine make the circle/bubbles fall through the air and roll and bounce on, over and around the objects you've created ("freeplay" version under the menu for this game). The game gets more sophisticated if you incorporate "pins" and "hinges" for your objects in this game, or play a kind of "golfing" version of this game for points and credits. Yes, meaningless, but fun it is... oh, how about observing the laws of physics! Surely it's infinitely better than watching an apple drop to the ground (but I doubt it'll create any scientific genuises out there).

This game by Alejandro Guillen has the rather low key and undescriptive name of "Magic Pen", and is one item available of the games website Bubblebox.com. It uses the ubiquitous Flash plugin software.

Little One speaking in unstoppable torrents...

posted Feb 4, 2010, 4:54 AM by speckonthe web   [ updated Feb 4, 2010, 5:23 AM ]

Well, I should have posted this late last year... I knew it would have to come, and I anticipated its coming with some fear: Little One has come to the stage where she CAN'T STOP TALKING! The year before she was still putting sentences together, and over the latter half of 2009, the sentences have kept coming out until you can no longer stop the torrent... But, as before, it's sometimes a little hard to make head or tail of what she's trying to say... The words and the sentence structure are there, but some of what she comes up with just doesn't make much sense to us adults. They'd put you in a psych ward if you babbled like that as an adult... Good thing she's just a little angel... a little babbling angel...
