COURSES

I offer a variety of enrichment classes for children ages 4 and up in history, science, math, language, and the arts.  Class ages are a guideline.  Contact me directly if you think your child would do well in a class outside of his or her age range.  Below are my current offerings for Spring 2013.

 Primary
History
Modern History: Part Two (1918-present)
Ages 9-11

Mondays:  January 28 to May 6; no class Feb. 18th, March 18th, or April 1st; May 13th reserved as a make up day in case of instructor illness (12 classes)

Location: Discovery Learning Center, 411 Roxas St., Santa Cruz
Cost: $250

In this class for younger history students we will study modern era world history using The Story of the World Volume 4 as our guide.  Students will need to provide their own copy of the book or the audio CDs.  Each week students will complete outside reading in The Story of the World Volume 4 and come to class for discussions, activities, and craft projects related to the reading. There will also be an optional online portion of the class where students complete weekly chapter summaries and view online resources such as videos, related websites, or games/simulations.

Intermediate History
Modern History: Part Two (1918-present)
Ages 11 and up

  (plus approximately 60-90 minutes a week in an online classroom)
Location: Discovery Learning Center, 411 Roxas St., Santa Cruz

In this class for older history students we will study modern era world history using The Story of the World Volume 4 as our guide.  Students will need to provide their own copy of the book or the audio CDs.  In this hybrid class, students will complete outside reading in The Story of the World Volume 4 and other given resources.  We'll discuss the readings and complete interactive projects related to the reading using an online classroom in a private Google Site.    Class time will be used to extend online discussions, participate in simulations, create art projects related to the era, and present projects.  This class will require more critical thinking, reading, writing, and computer skills than the 9-11 year old class.

Exploring Design in Our World
Ages 9-14

This multidisciplinary class will explore concepts of design in our world.  We will complete several independent and group projects exploring the designed world around us and then we'll learn how to use the design process to solve real problems in our lives.  This class will integrate critical and creative thinking, problem solving, communication skills, and teamwork.  Some outside class time will be required to complete some of the projects.
