Workshop Structure

The workshop will begin with an introductory session in which EPA will highlight the significant features of the NAAQS review process and of the last NOx and SOx secondary NAAQS review, specifically emphasizing key policy-relevant issues, building on the experiences gained in the last review. The panel sessions, each facilitated by two co-chairs, will then address the following topic areas:

v  Session I - Ecosystem Acidification
v  Part One – Terrestrial Acidification
v  Identification and interpretation of the science: planning for the Integrated Science Assessment
v  Planning for the assessment of NOx and SOx-associated risks and/or exposures
v  Part Two- Aquatic Acidification and Sulfur-Driven Mercury Methylation
v  Identification and interpretation of the science: planning for the Integrated Science Assessment
v  Planning for the assessment of NOx and SOx-associated risks and/or exposures

v
Session II – Nutrient Enrichment and Eutrophication
v  Part One – Aquatic Nutrient Enrichment
v  Identification and interpretation of the science: planning for the Integrated Science Assessment
v  Planning for the assessment of NOx and SOx-associated risks and/or exposures
v  Part Two – Terrestrial Nutrient Enrichment
v  Identification and interpretation of the science: planning for the Integrated Science Assessment
v  Planning for the assessment of NOx and SOx-associated risks and/or exposures

v  Session III - Atmospheric Science and Deposition
v  Part One - Identification and interpretation of the science: planning for the Integrated Science Assessment
v  Part Two - Planning for the assessment of NOx and SOx-associated risks and/or exposures

The panel co-chairs will begin each session by highlighting appropriate background information and policy-relevant issues, and lead discussants will provide opening comments on the topic. Other panel members and interested participants will then be invited to join a structured discussion of the topic. The co-chairs will moderate each session to ensure the discussion remains focused on providing guidance to help EPA plan the NOx and SOx NAAQS review.

The charge questions for each Session Panel Discussion provide a starting point for the discussion in each session. These questions are not intended to be prescriptive or limit discussion of other relevant issues. Rather, it is understood that some issues will warrant more discussion time than others and that the agenda could change during the course of the workshop as panel members and other participants offer input and respond to issues that are raised.
