Home Raynet-UK

Updated 04 September 2018

Welcome to the home of the South Wiltshire Raynet -UK

Who are we:

RAYNET-UK (The Radio Amateurs’ Emergency Network) is the UK’s national voluntary communications service provided for the community by licensed radio amateurs.

The organisation was formed in 1953 following the East Coast floods, when radio amateurs provided emergency communications.

What do we do:

We provide a flexible communications service for:

  • civil emergencies,
  • local community events,
  • or related exercises.

What we are not:

We are not event marshals, but  we do provide secondary safety radio communication for the user service(s).

Our area:

South Wilts Raynet-UK cover South Wiltshire, included the South half of Salisbury Plain.  (North Wiltshire Raynet covering the remaining North half of the County.)  We have assisted other Raynet groups with events in Counties bordering Wiltshire.

What have we done (past year):
  • The Naomi House Clarenden Walk Salisbury to Winchester,
  • Amesbury Carnival,
  • Salisbury 10K Run,
  • The Way of the Cross.
Whom do we do it for:

RAYNET-UK, under the terms of the amateur radio licence, is permitted to pass messages on behalf of:

  • Any UK Police force, Fire & Rescue service or Ambulance trust,
  • St Johns' Ambulance,
  • British Red Cross,
  • St Andrew's Ambulance Association,
  • Local (or Unitery) Authority Emergency Planning Officers,
  • Royal Volunteer Service (RVS),
  • Salvation Army,
  • HM Coastguard,
  • Any Health Authority (includes messages to/from medical staff),
  • Any government department (includes Civil Service / Military staff involved),
  • Any Utility Service.
How do we do it:

RAYNET-UK volunteers normally use their own amateur radio equipment to provide communications.

Voice transmissions are the norm, but typed messages in the form of data transmissions are being increasingly used, allowing 100% accurate messages to be passed.

How we train:

RAYNET-UK personnel provide additional safety communications for local fun runs, marathons, car rallies and a wide variety of events, whereby message passing, engineering skills and operational procedures can be tried and tested.
