Capacity Development

Much of the Education Cluster's work is focused on capacity development of all those active in the Education Cluster, as well as other key partners and stakeholders. In 2011, the Education Cluster has trained around 250 education actors on key principles and tools for emergency response. 

Training Materials 

Preparing for CAP 2012 - Designing Education in Emergencies Programming and Writing Quality Proposals 
These training materials were used in our CAP 2012 Preparation Workshop. The Workshop Objectives were to ensure participants had:

  • A thorough understanding of humanitarian planning and funding mechanisms in South Sudan 
  • Strengthened technical project design and proposal writing skills to ensure quality, inclusive and accountable emergency interventions
  • Knowledge of the process for full participation in the development of CAP 2012 for South Sudan, in line with the Education Cluster strategy and key tools and standards
Modules included: Introduction to CAP; The Humanitarian Context in South Sudan - Emergencies and their Impact on Education; Education Cluster - Providing Education in Emergencies; Designing EiE Programmes, Activities and Outcomes; INEE Minimum Standards; Gender; Disability and Inclusion; Monitoring and Evaluation; Donor Panel; Successful Proposal Writing; Taking Action. Education in Emergencies Training Materials 
The training materials used in our State Level training are adapted from the Global Education Cluster and INEE Training Package. They have been adapted and contextualized for use in South Sudan. The Objectives of the trainings were to: 
  • Increase knowledge about the technical aspects of education in emergencies including key tools and standards
  • Ensure a thorough understanding of the Education Cluster mandate and objectives to enable the engagement of State and County level cluster partners 
  • Facilitate State and County level emergency education preparedness and response action planning
Modules included: Introduction to Emergencies; Rationale for Education in Emergencies; Frameworks and Phases of Education in Emergencies; Coordination; Temporary Learning Spaces, Psychosocial Support, Gender and Inclusion, Education in Emergencies Needs Assessments; Response Planning; Action Planning. Download the training materials here:

Training Schedule 
In the first half of 2011 there are several workshops focused on training those working with the Education Cluster at State level:

Unity State Level Education in Emergencies Training - Planned 
November TBC. This training is for SMoE, NGO and UN staff working on education in emergencies in Unity. 

CAP 2012 Preparation Workshop - Completed
16-18 August 2011, Regency Hotel. This training was international and national NGOs who plan to submit projects to CAP 2012. 

National State Level Focal Points Training - Completed
23-27 May 2011, Intra-Africa Hotel. This training was for SMoE, NGO and UNICEF Focal Points working in each of the 10 States in South Sudan. 

Central Equatoria State Level Education in Emergencies Training - Completed 
30 March - 1 April 2011. This training was for SMoE, NGO and UN staff working on education in emergencies in Central Equatoria.

Upper Nile State Level Education in Emergencies Training - Completed
8-10 June 2011. This training was for SMoE, NGO and UN staff working on education in emergencies in Upper Nile State. 

Lakes Equatoria State Level Education in Emergencies Training - Completed  
19 - 21 July. This training was for SMoE, NGO and UN staff working on education in emergencies in Lakes.

Western Equatoria State Level Education in Emergencies Training - Completed
26 - 28 July. This training was for SMoE, NGO and UN staff working on education in emergencies in Western Equatoria.

Eastern Equatoria State Level Education in Emergencies Training - Completed
2 - 4 August. This training was for SMoE, NGO and UN staff working on education in emergencies in Eastern Equatoria.
