Junior Section

Southport Junior Chess Club has been running since 2005. We are based in the Conservative Club, Bath Street, Southport and provide a warm and friendly environment where juniors of all ages and chess abilities can socialise and play chess. The club caters for young people aged 5 – 18 years.

The junior club between runs  6pm and 7.30pm throughout the year.

Southport are represented in the newly founded Merseyside Junior League with a team of 5 plus 3 reserves. All team members have automatic ECF (English Chess Federation) membership; thus  our Junior team and the reserves will be able to obtain a national Grade from the ECF.

Southport Chess Club is a Learning Destination for the Children’s University and therefore able to verify learning activities.

We run regular competitions and structured, skill learning sessions as a group and on an individual basis but always with fun!

There is a “tuck shop” where penny sweets can be purchased and squash is provided by The Conservative Club.

Many of our former juniors have progressed to such an extent that they now represent our two senior teams who play in divisions 2 and 4 of the Merseyside League.

The annual cost is £15 per junior with a £1 subscription per visit.

Both principals of the club have current DBS clearance however parents are welcome to stay, provided they don’t interfere!

 Children's University Learning Destination
Southport J
uniors have registered with the Children’s University and become a Learning Destination. Learning Destinations are places an
d organisations to which children can 'travel' with their Passport To Learning.  It will allow the juniors to get their passports stamped during each visit to the chess club.  Children's University students use Passports To Learning in which they record the number of hours of completed CU validated learning activities.

Children are encouraged to progress through the CU Certification scheme, based on the number of hours of attendance throughout their involvement with the Children's University. Bronze, silver and gold certificates are awarded at CU Undergraduate, CU Postgraduate and CU Doctorate levels. The certificates are usually presented at a graduation ceremony organised through the local Children's University.

The Children’
s University (CU) Trust offers 7-14 year olds (and 5 to 6 year olds with their families) exciting and innovative learning activities and experiences outside normal school hours.
Don’t forget to bring your passports!
