Where is South Korea Located?

South Korea is located in the eastern part of Asia.  South Korea is located on the lower half of the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea located at the top.  South Korea boarders the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea.

37.00 N 127.30 E

Size of South Korea:

99,720 sq km which is roughly the size of Indiana

Land boundaries:

South Korea shares a 238 km boarder with North Korea along the 38th Parallel.  This boarder is the most heavily militarized boarder in the world. 


South Korea has a temperate climate most of the year with heavier rainfall in the summer.  


South Korea has many hills and mountains.  The highest point in South Korea is Halla-san at1,950 meters and the lowest point is the Sea of Japan at 0 meters (sea level).  

Natural hazards/disasters:

  • High winds and floods due to typhoons.
  • Halla-san is an active volcano although it hasn't erupted in many centuries.
