This is an example of the way that I sometimes find things. You start from a general point (open directory ) and narrow down what you are looking for ( in this case , nonprofit resources).

OPEN DIRECTORY /SOCIETY/ORGANIZATIONS/NONPROFITS/RESOURCES

This page has some links to general useful sites . Very vague explanation , I know , but like I said , if you dig around enough , you find all sorts of resources of help. it is definately worth the digging !

These are sites/organizations that help people with small financial grants. You don't have to pay them back. Sometimes , all a person needs is a little step up to continue their own journey in life.

One such site is Modest Needs . They give grants mostly for one-time needs , such as a heating bill .

MODEST NEEDS

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Modest needs has a search feature that I like to use to find new sources for help . Here is the direct link to that page .

Another organization similar to Modest Needs is Net Wish . You are asked to tell your situation in detail and then you might receive help up to $500.00 .

Another site for people to have their needs taken care of ,

Wish Upon a Hero works using the idea of  “No wish too large and no hero too small,” This is a one of a kind service designed to "connect those in need with people that can truly change their lives."

This organization is called the Giants of Generosity . Their statement of mission :"Our Mission is to respond to the most pressing needs of people who are experiencing desperate times."
Go to their website and fill out a form . Be honest . Remember that MANY people besides you are experiencing desperate situations . You may be one of the people chosen for assistance.

I hesitate to add this one , because it is a loan , not a grant.  My theory is ( and I have proved this one personally ) if you don't have money in the first place , and then get a loan or go into any kind of debt , you are adding to your problem .Still , there are emergencies that sometimes are not our fault . It is so important to think this one over. Even in an emergency there may be help from family , friends , co-workers , or church.

PROSPER DOT COM

On this site , you can find : hard-to-find 800 numbers. It is interesting that many major organizations don't seem to want us contacting them . At least they make it hard to do so. There is an A-Z listing to click on for the pages , directly above the part that has "Most accessed 800 numbers"

Here is a  page that tells about benefits from the government , state- by- state . My personal experience with the government has not been that great. One exception would be food stamps , and a pseudo-government program in my own town for medical help . Those two programs have been literally , life savers. My hope is that my fellow low income community finds more help through the government than I have.
