Annual Workshop 2021

The Southern Sierra Prescribed Fire Council will be hosting its annual workshop and conference on November 17 and 18, 2021. Private lands burning- developments and successes will be the focus of this event. November 17 will be an evening program with guest speakers via Zoom, while November 18 will be a field day in Shaver Lake, CA.

CARX Burn Boss Training

The California State-Certified Burn Boss Program has made it through the final stage of approvals and will roll out in 2021. This program is intended for experienced prescribed fire practioners and has some fairly rigorous pre-requisites to be accepted. Please contact Lenya Quinn-Davidson if you would like more information on this program or if you are interested in training to become a certfied Burn Boss.

The cadre is working to plan the first three courses, which they hoep to roll out in different locations upa and down the state this spring.

Prescribed Burn Associations

The Southern Sierra Prescribed Fire Council supports the formation of Prescribed Burn Associations and Range Improvement Associations. These collaborative groups utilize the "neighbor helping neighbor" approach to encourage landowners to share resources and manpower to help each other manage their forest, oak woodland and rangeland in the Southtern Sierra.

The Southern Sierra Regional Prescribed Burn Association is a newly developing regional PBA supporting the formation of local prescribed burn associations in the Southern Sierra region. For more information or to join one of our field days, please contact Sheri Mace.

The Sierra Sequoia Burn Cooperative is a newly forming local prescribed burn association bringing landowners and tribal fire crews together to promote prescribed burning. For more information, please contact Jared Aldern.

  • Provide a focus for successes and challenges regarding prescribed burning in the southern Sierra Nevada region.

  • Facilitate the exchange of information regarding the appropriate application of prescribed burning and its effects.

  • Promote a general public understanding the role of fire in ecosystems, and the role of prescribed fire in ecosystem management.

  • Promote safety, training, and research in the art and science of prescribed fire.

  • Provide an open forum for discussions on prescribed fire practices, natural ignitions, cultural fire, smoke applications and management, regulations, and policies as a means to encourage the use of prescribed burning.
