The first meeting of the 2010-2011 school year! A breif introduction of the club and officers were given. Volunteer and fundraising opportunities were given and members were also asked to fill out a questionnaire.
Brenda Jacob from General Mills and founder of S.O.N.D. came to speak about her experiences working in the labeling department. Also, she discussed her career paths and motivation for starting S.O.N.D. Officer elections were held. Our last event will be a cooking class on May 7th, 2010.
Kristine Igo from Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives came to speak about sustainable food systems. Announcements regarding officer elections, bake sale fundraiser, and other upcoming events. Our next meeting will be April 21st, 2010
The Fairview Dietetic Interns came to speak about their experience in the dietetic internship program. T-Shirts were passed out. Volunteer opportunity at the Hope Lodge was discussed and will be further announced with dates. There will be a Healthy Bake Sale on Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 for National Nutrition Month in March.
Derek Timm spoke to students about the best way to utilize technology fee funds. Carrie Earthman, who is the the head of the Didactic Program, spoke to students about the Nutrition Sciences major at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. T-shirt edits were discussed. Alida Sorsenson, a U of M Nutrition/Dietetics major and Spanish minor came to speak about her experience as a Nutrition Educator at WIC. Members voted on t-shirt designs. Cedar Riverside Volunteer event was announced. (See Announcements link for details and contact information)
This was the first meeting of the 2009-2010 school year. The Student Organization of Nutrition and Dietetics Club was introduced to members. Also, volunteer opportunities, t-shirt competition, fund raising ideas, and membership dues were discussed. Members were given a survey about what they would like out of the club this year.
Lucas Sjostrom from the St Paul Career Center talked about networking and informational interviews to get ready for teh 2009 SOND Career Fair in March. Also, Anne Heeg form HCMC talked about her background, internship experience, and her current career path at HCMC.
Zahra Parsinezhad talked about her UROP result analyzing the gap between the food service industry and school kitchens. Kristi Grzadzieleski also talked about her business, Butterfly Life, and her career path leading up to this, and her plans for the future.
Carrie Earthman spoke about the Didactic Program in Dietetics here at the University of Minnesota. She also explained Dietetic Internships and gave advise about how to prepare for applying for internships. We also heard from two current interns at Fairview about the internship they are in, and the application and interview process they went through.
During the first meeting of the 2008-2009 school year, volunteer opportunities and upcoming events were announced, including the 2009 SOND Career Fair. Therese Liffrig, the adviser to many nutrition majors here at the UofMN, spoke about the major and career options after graduation.
In the last SOND meeting of the 2007-2008 school year we elected new officers for 2008-2009 and had a cooking demonstration. Chef Bill Lendway, and his assistants Marie and Anna, taught us how to make delicious Mexican food. Recipes are included in this months meeting minutes.
Maggie Kubak spoke about St. Paul Campus Career Center resources available to students. Guest speakers Jill Paulson and Sue Moores spoke about career opportunities in the nutrition field without being registered dietitian. Finally, Christine Twait RD, spoke about her job and volunteer opportunities available at Boynton Health Services.
The September meeting was the first SOND meeting of the school year. We had nutrition academic adviser, Therese Liffrig, speak. She talked about her dietetic background and advice for students entering the field.
