Welcome to my personal website. I am an Associate Professor in the Economics group at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. I completed my PhD in Economics from the University of Houston, USA.
I am an Editorial Board Member at the Journal of Development Studies. I am also a Research Affiliate at the Global Action for Policy (GAP) Initiative at Northeastern University, and a Fellow of the Global Labor Organization (GLO). I am also a pro-bono Advisor for the CarbonShunya Initiative of the organization, People4Planet.
Prior to IIM Calcutta, I have worked as an Assistant Professor in the Economics & Business Environment Area at the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow and as a Lecturer in Development Economics at the Global Development Institute at the University of Manchester (UK). I have also been an Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics at FLAME University.
In January 2023, I was awarded the "Prof M J Manohar Rao Award" by The Indian Econometric Society which is an annual award given out to young economists under the age of 35 who are working in India in recognition of their early career research in quantitative economics.
I have two broad areas of research. One, the political economy of developing countries. In this area, I work on issues related to electoral politics, political competition, governance, public finance etc and study their intersections with development outcomes. Second, the economics of human capital. In this area, I work on issues in education, health, labor and gender - mostly with an interest in understanding spillovers, including intergenerational spillovers, and longer term impacts. Outside these main areas, I often pickup topics in agricultural economics and environmental economics as well, if I find compelling questions related to development studies.
