LOCAL COMPOSTING with Solvir SEPARAAT versus flush toilet, sewage and water treatment

To restore the natural balance of the planet, it is essential that mankind switches to an environmentally responsible lifestyle: a behavior where the ecosystems are not adversely affected. Which in practice means that we do not bring in or withdraw substances from the environment which disturb the natural balance. The system of sewage still meets by no means to this principle, despite of the sewage treatment systems. Besides the considerable discharge of substances into the environment, there is a tremendous need for infrastructure, which obviously requires a lot of resources and energy. Moreover there is an impending shortage of nutrients for agriculture and horticulture.
The obvious alternative is that of local composting and use of the fertilizers for (vegetable-) gardens, fields and woodland, and possibly also in fish or algae ponds.
2: drop 2 - 3 sheets of (news-)paper; 3: press to have it flattend; with the paper standing up along the wall; 4: close with lid
The Solvir Separaat
After many years of experimenting and critically monitoring the results of others I am very happy for several years with a toilet system with separate collection of urine and faeces, cover with paper and press with a sort of pestle: the Solvir Separaat. It can be places anywhere, because there are no pipes required. There are no problems of odor, a not clean appearance of the toilet, or plagues of insects; and processing on private grounds is simple and hygienic. Also in case of sickness, vomiting, menstruation etc. there is no significant difference with the water flushed toilet. Instead of flushing now you cover the deposited with paper. That idea "cover with paper" comes from De Twaalf Ambachten, where Sietz Leeflang for many years the thrust produced. It is also practical to have a second container (bucket with lid) available, so you have no problems if the toilet is full, ditto for the urine tank. In addition, if anyone has a private toilet, then you will never be unpleasantly surprised.
The urine is sterile and can savely be poured at each time different places of the yard. It enriches the mineral balance, without leaching into groundwater, provided the soil is well rooted by plants or trees.
Dig for the poop package a only 20 cm deep hole in the ground and turn over the bucket above it. If you always have placed the paper in the bucket well, then the whole package will drop from the bucket, which then will be practically clean, but just needs to be rinsed and dried.
The packages should be covered with the excavated soil and then left a year to fully decompose. Then you will find there only beautiful black soil that you can use safely elsewhere to enrich the soil with nutrients.
The poop bucket can be used many times before to be quite full (because of the crushing each time). It is nevertheless advisable to empty the bucket once every one or two weeks, depending on the temperature. This is to avoid that nuisance will be caused by larvae. If i.a. flies slip into the bucket, then there will be eggs laid, whose larvae after several days will creep up along the wall of the bucket.
The Separate can also be placed outside on the ground, without the use of a poo-bucket, but otherwise in the same manner as described above. Dig a hole 20cm deep and 50cm in diameter and place thereon the Separate with a specially designed base plate with bearing and sealing function. The storage capacity is now so great that the arrangement can be used several months. Finally move the Separate and cover the remaining package with a layer of earth.
To have shelter you can ofcourse place the Separaat inside a cabin or tent. Make there perhaps also a laundrette or bidet.
Note that when using this option nuisance may arise due to larvae, slag, etc., in spite of the necessary seal at the top. With regular use of a scoop, toilet brush and some water discomfort is to be reduced. Thereby remove the bugs as much as possible from the Separate.
Remarks:
For the convenience of the men it is nice also to have a separate urinal, which is used in standing position. Simple version: place on a stool a tank with a funnel that you can make for example by cutting a PET bottle.
Use tanks (with screw cap) and no buckets for the urine: to prevent odors and also because walking with buckets sometimes lead to spillage. Preferably transparent plastic tanks so you easy can keep track of the level.
It is not a hot topic of composting toilets to save water, because a normal flush toilet you can also flush with rain and groundwater which is plentiful.
If you prefer a flush toilet, then you might have a septic tank built by blending into a purifying flow field (pouring on the land is a questionable solution given the bacterial activity of the blend). That, however, requires a lot of space and a good investment, and yet maintenance. To bridge frost periods there will also have to be a buffer container.
