Moleculine and the Physical Software Paradigm...

After the collapse, new social, industrial and intellectual systems are emerging everywhere, and the tools to create something new and stable are the new tools, not the same old ones...

The new material reality will be strong when based on a better science, better tools and better worldview than the ones that created the previous system...

The above is the reason and motives to develop the Moleculine Project, a chance to create a reality more "intelligent" than the old one...


3D Printers are the revolution that allow you to "make" almost anything... now Moleculine will make possible to give each 3D Printed Object its own "brain" (computer), with enough "intelligence" to make it a "intelligent 3D Printed Object"...


Imagine a light (illumination) that can sense human presence and regulate itself for 10%, 20%, 50% of the total possible illumination... ALSO, imagine that you can UPLOAD to it your own modified software, so that it behaves the way YOU want it...


Now that large number of the human beings have a "PC" in their pockets, as well as in their houses, it is already possible to think of a "personal computer" for each object we have in our houses, business, social institutions...
I personally feel that it can have a huge effect on science by creating a more "intelligent" lab without the need of huge sums of money and complex tools...

“Wasting Transistors” and “Wasting Microcontrollers”…


In the early days of computers, they were made using transistors which then were VERY EXPENSIVE, and so, all the software needs to be carefully designed to make the “best possible usage of them” since time spend on computers were very expensive. This was the mindset of “scarcity” transistors and “scarcity” computers. EVERYTHING was EXPENSIVE.
Computers were good for important scientific computation and for big businesses to do large number processing…

As technology and commerce advances, transistors became more and more cheap, and Alan Kay (among others) start to play around a paradigm shift in thinking about transistors: instead of “scarcity” mindset he wants to use the “abundant” mindset and “waste transistors” by leaving then ALL THE TIME processing and running pictures on a screen (instead of doing large numeric computation). In this sense, he start to “waste transistors” and “waste computer processing time” doing pictures on screen, not doing computations or any other “valuable” task…

The Graphical User Interface notion ceases to be an idea inside the mind of few people and could then became a reality in practical world. Since transistors were cheap enough, they can be used to drawn pictures on screen so that the user could interact more friendly with the computer. Apple Macintosh was the first commercial successful microcomputer to incorporate the Graphical User Interface.

In the age of “scarcity transistors” computers were expensive machines to make numeric computations, but by thinking around the notion of “wasting transistors”, because they were (then) abundant, Alan Kay and others were able to create a PARADIGM SHIFT in the computer industry, and bring computers to houses and offices (personal computers age). Since then, people could use personal computers to do more things beyond the “valuable computations”…

Facebook and Youtube still run on “computers”, but we live in a difference PARADIGM today, regarding to the use of the computers… these are NOT “valuable computations”…

Each MCU is in reality a tiny complete computer!

Right now, we are witnessing the same MAGNITUDE JUMP in thinking, A PARADIGM SHIFT as powerful as before (in this author’s point of view, much more powerful)!

This time, not transistors but the computer itself, now living inside a MCU (microcontroller – above picture) is CHEAP ENOUGH to allows for an “abundant thinking” about its usage. We can literally “waste” MCUs, for example, collecting data ALL THE TIME, exclusively dedicated to this task (thus “wasting” them there) permanently… and because they are SMALL ENOUGH, we can attach them to any object we want, and “waste it” (forget about is reuse or multipurpose) there providing continuous benefit…

Arduinos and RaspberryPIs are wonderful devices for use when creating physical software, and now Moleculine can complement them by offering simpler, smaller and cheaper alternative when the task is simple and small. In fact, Molecs are good when the task is small and there is need for several of even dozens of them in different physical places…

Having very simple Molecs within very cheap price range WILL ENABLE liberal usage (abundant mindset) thus creating a PARADIGM SHIFT in benefits. Using the current best choices out there (Arduino and Raspberry PI) we will be facing CONSTRAINTS in thinking and in action, and thus we will be PREVENTED TO CROSS TO THE NEXT LEVEL of abundant data and interaction with the environment around us…

So, “waste microcontroller” really means that we can, FOR THE FIRST TIME, ACHIEVE ITS FULL BENEFITS WITHOUT CONSTRAINTS of cost, we now can just “leave them there”, performing a single task all the time…

And it is the benefits that come from these tasks being performed ALL THE TIME that creates a HIGHER PARADIGM IN THINKING AND DOING…


[Practical Example - MicroBlackBox]
One such practical example for the “abundant MCU (microcontroller)” is the MicroBlackBox Prototype shown here is this picture. This one can record hours and hours of environment temperature and uses its own internal flash-disk to store information…
