  • Consolidated Human Activity Database - CHAD
To understand how humans are exposed to chemicals, scientists need to have accurate information on what people do every day – where they spend their time, what they eat, and how long they sleep, for example. These activities determine the contexts, circumstances, and durations of our chemical exposures. Using these data, scientists can better understand the chemicals that pose threats to human health, and how best to limit or eliminate these risks.
  • DATABASES : INTERNET: SEARCH TOOLS : PUBLICATIONS: OPEN SOURCE: Bielefeld University Library. Base
"BASE is one of the world's most voluminous search engines especially for academic open access web resources. BASE is operated by Bielefeld University Library.
    .
As the open access movement grows and prospers, more and more repository servers come into being which use the "Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting" (OAI-PMH) for providing their contents. BASE collects, normalises, and indexes these data. BASE provides more than 40 million documents from more than 2,400 sources. You can access the full
texts of about 75% of the indexed documents. The Index is continuously enhanced by integrating further OAI sources as well as local sources. Our
OAI-PMH Blog communicates information related to harvesting and aggregating activities performed for BASE.
    .
BASE is a registered OAI service provider and contributed to the European project "Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research" (DRIVER). Database managers can integrate the BASE index into your own local infrastructure (e.g. meta search engines, library catalogues) via an interface.
    .
In comparison to commercial search engines, BASE is charcterised by the following features:
    .
    Intellectually selected resources
    .
Only document servers that comply with the specific requirements of academic quality and relevance are included
    .
A data resources inventory provides transparency in the searches
    .
Discloses web resources of the "Deep Web", which are ignored by commercial search engines or get lost in the vast quantity of hits.

  • GOVERNMENT DATABASES, DOCUMENTS AND WEB SITES IN HEALTH AND MEDICINE
"Within the last few years, the United States government has initiated a major effort to make government publications available in electronic format. Although there are still print materials produced, the trend for publicly available materials or those designed for mass distribution has been to make electronic copies available for printing or downloading. In some cases, the electronic version is the only version, leading to some concerns about future access to electronic-only materials and the archiving of such documents. In fact, there now exists the possibility that documents may be easily and permanently removed from public access, because of the electronic-version only policy. However, the trend towards having electronic-only versions will likely continue."

  • MEDICINE : RESEARCH : DATABASES: MEDICAL HEALTH BIOSCIENCES BIOLOGY PSYCHOLOGY: Google Scholar Retrieves Twice as Many Relevant Citations as PubMed and Provides Greater Full-Text Access for Quick, Clinical Nephrology Searches
"Conclusion Google Scholar provides better recall and provides more access to full-text than PubMed; however, search strings provided by nephrologists used in both databases failed to retrieve 80% of relevant articles. Therefore improving nephrologists ability to effectively search could enhance their ability to implement research in practice helping patients.

    snip

This research article is significant in its rigorous comparison of Google
Scholar and PubMed and provides valuable insight for medical librarians,
and possibly librarians who work in other fields as well. As more people
use Google Scholar for quickly finding research to use in clinical therapy, it is important that librarians understand the strengths and weaknesses of the database and its place in literature searching. As the researchers note that most nephrologists view fewer than 40 search results, it would be interesting to replicate the study given PubMeds recently introduced relevancy ranking, a feature that may have given Google Scholar the edge in retrieving more relevant results in the first 40 records."

  • National Labor Relations Board. Cases and Decisions
    Board Decisions

Online NLRB decisions are offered in PDF format. Slip opinions are subject to revision before publication in bound volumes.
    Unpublished Board Decisions

The Board decisions listed here are not intended or appropriate for publication and are not binding precedent, except with respect to the parties in the specific case. The Board began posting unpublished decisions on February 4, 2011.
Information on Decisions Issued by January 4, 2012 Board Member Appointees

On January 4, 2012, President Obama named three individuals as “recess appointments” to the National Labor Relations Board. On June 26, 2014, the United States Supreme Court issued its decision in NLRB v. Noel Canning, 134 S. Ct. 2550 (2014), holding that these appointments to the Board were not valid. Below is a list, compiled by the NLRB, of contested cases in which one or more of these challenged appointees participated in the issuance of a decision.
    Administrative Law Judge Decisions

After a Regional Director issues a complaint in an unfair labor practice case, an NLRB Administrative Law Judge hears the case and issues a decision and recommended order, which can then be appealed to the Board in Washington. If no exceptions are filed, the judge's order becomes the order of the Board. An administrative law judge's decision is not binding legal precedent in other cases unless it has been adopted by the Board on review of exceptions; these judges function much like trial court judges hearing a case without a jury.
    Advice Memos

Advice memoranda issue guidance to regional office directing dismissal of charges.
    Appellate Court Briefs and Motions

After the Board issues a decision and final order in a contested unfair labor practice case, any person aggrieved may seek review of the final order, and the Board may seek enforcement of its order, in an appropriate United States Court of Appeals. The General Counsel represents the Board in the Court of Appeals. The briefs and occasional motions filed by the General Counsel in support of the Board's orders are listed chronologically by filing date.
Contempt, Compliance, and Special Litigation Branch Briefs

The Contempt, Compliance, and Special Litigation Branch (CCSLB) represents the Board and the General Counsel in all suits not statutorily based on Sections 10(e) and (f) of the Act, and conducts civil and criminal contempt litigation to obtain compliance with Board orders.
    Invitations to File Briefs

The National Labor Relations Board occasionally invites the public and all interested parties to file amicus briefs in cases of significance or high interest.
    Weekly Summaries of Decisions

The Weekly Summary of Decisions is a digest of decisions issued by the Board and Administrative Law Judges the previous week, with a short description of the nature and facts of the case and a link to the decision, and also desicions by Appellate Courts involving NLRB cases.
    Regional Election Decisions

Four types of Regional election Decisions are available here:

Decisions and Directions of Elections (D&DEs) - the Regional Director concludes that the prerequisites to an election have been satisfied and directs that an election be conducted.
Decisions and Orders (D&Os) - the Regional Director determines that an election should not be conducted and the petition is dismissed.
Administrative Report on Objections and Challenges - a report resolving post-election objections and/or challenges based on an administrative investigation, which was conducted after the election was held.
Regional Director Supplemental Decision - a post-election decision regarding objections and/or challenges, including, in some cases, passing on recommendations made by Hearing Officer after a post-election hearing.

  • State Agency Databases Across the Fifty States
In every US State and the District of Columbia, agencies are creating databases of useful information - information on businesses, licensed professionals, plots of land, even dates of fish stocking. Some of this content is available on search engines, but much of it is part of the invisible web.

Since July 2007, librarians and other government information specialists have been working on identifying and annotating these databases in one place. We've chased across fifty state web sites so you don't have to! ALA RUSA named this site one of its Best Free Reference Web Sites of 2012!!
  • Transportation Research Board. TRIS,TRID, and ITRD Databases
A search of this database finds 3941 records for a search of social work.

TRID is an integrated database that combines the records from TRB’s Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) Database and the OECD’s Joint Transport Research Centre’s International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) Database. • UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF LABOR. Employment and Training Administration. O*NET - Beyond Information - Intelligence
The Occupational Information Network (O*NET) is a database of occupational requirements and worker attributes. It describes occupations in terms of the skills and knowledge required, how the work is performed, and typical work settings. It can be used by businesses, educators, job seekers, human resources professionals, and the publicly funded Workforce Investment System to help meet the talent needs of our competitive global economy. O*NET information helps support the creation of industry competency models.

    The O*NET System:

Promotes business efficiency and talent development
Supports education of the workforce through skills training and curriculum design for regional economic development
Facilitates career guidance and career advancement accounts

The O*NET system, using a common language and terminology to describe occupational requirements, supersedes the seventy-year-old Dictionary of Occupational Titles with current information that can be accessed online or through a variety of public and private sector career and labor market information systems. The O*NET system, which has been significantly upgraded and improved since its introduction and continues to undergo periodic enhancements, includes the O*NET database, O*NET OnLine, and the O*NET Career Exploration Tools.

    O*NET Database

The O*NET database is a comprehensive source of descriptors, with ratings of importance, level, relevance or extent, for more than 900 occupations that are key to our economy. O*NET descriptors include: skills, abilities, knowledge, tasks, work activities, work context, experience levels required, job interests, work values/needs, and work styles. New tools and technology (T2) data provides information on machines, equipment, tools, and software that workers may use for optimal functioning in a high performance workplace.

    O*NET OnLine

O*NET OnLine is a web-based viewer that provides easy public access to O*NET information. Powered by the latest O*NET database, users have access to new and updated data unavailable before. Using O*NET OnLine, students, job seekers and workforce, business, and human resource professionals can: find occupations to explore, search for occupations that use designated skills, browse occupations by high growth industry, identify key In-Demand occupations, view occupation summaries and details, use crosswalks from other classification systems such as military or apprenticeship to find corresponding O*NET occupations, view related occupations, create and print customized reports outlining their O*NET search results, and link to other online information resources.

"So many of our modern health problems stem from issues of abundance: fast food, car-friendly suburbs, and endless couch-borne entertainment.

The cure for these, according to the quantified-self cult of Silicon Valley, is more data! Just collect information about every step we take, every beat of our heart, every toss we take in our sleep, everything we eat and every drop we drink, and all will be revealed.

But what if the abundance of data, too, is part of the problem?"

  • WIPO Statistics
"We cooperate with intellectual property (IP) offices from around the world to provide our stakeholders with up-to-date IP statistics. We also publish statistical reports on worldwide IP activity and on the use of WIPO-administered treaties in the protection of IP rights internationally.

Reliable IP statistics are an important tool in understanding trends in business and technology and in the use of the IP system worldwide and across different countries.
    Data information ↓

IP data published in these pages are taken from the WIPO Statistics Database. The database contains:

Data provided by national/regional IP offices for WIPO's Annual IP Data Survey. The data are collected at an aggregate level by various breakdowns (e.g. number of patent filings or grants by office and origin, etc.). A continuing effort is made to improve the quality and availability of IP statistics. It is difficult to obtain data for all IP offices with all possible breakdowns, however every effort is made to cover data for as many offices and countries as possible; and

Data compiled by WIPO during the application process of international filings through the Patent Cooperation Treaty, the Madrid System and the Hague System.

In addition, indicators of patent families and fields of technology are developed by WIPO based on data from the PATSTAT database, which is maintained by the European Patent Office.

IP data reported in these pages are based on the following concepts:

Country of origin: used to categorize IP data by resident (domestic) and non-resident (foreign). The residence of the first-named applicant (or inventor) recorded in the IP document (e.g. patent or trademark application) is used to classify IP data by country of origin.

Resident and non-resident: a resident IP filing refers to an application filed by an applicant at its national IP office. For example, an application filed by an applicant resident of Japan at the IP office of Japan is considered as a resident filing for Japan IP office data. Similarly, a non-resident filing refers to an IP application filed by an applicant at a foreign IP office. For example, an application filed at the IP office of China by an applicant residing in France is considered a non-resident filing for China IP office data. The IP grant (registration) data are based on the same concept.
Filing and grant date: the IP filing data are based on the date of filing. The IP grant (registration) data are based on the date of grant (registration). The IP data by field of technology are based on the date of publication and the patent families data are based on the priority (or first filing) date."

  • Data for Research (DfR) FROM JSTOR
    About Data for Research (DfR):

"Data for Research is a free service for researchers wishing to analyze content on JSTOR through a variety of lenses and perspectives. DfR enables researchers to find useful patterns, associations and unforeseen relationships in the body of research available in the journal and pamphlet archives on JSTOR. To this end we provide data sets of documents to researchers: OCR, metadata, Key Terms, N-grams and reference text.

JSTOR incorporates metadata and OCR text from many different sources. We work to mitigate any inconsistencies, but you may come across issues with datasets, such as duplicate OCR, missing OCR, or incomplete metadata. Please contact us if you encounter data issues.

    Using the site:

Through a faceted interface, researchers can explore the entire JSTOR archive, quickly and easily defining content of interest through an iterative process of searching and results filtering. By creating a DfR account, you can download the metadata, word frequencies, citations, key terms, and N-grams of up to 1,000 documents. The interface operates on Boolean logic but should you find your query especially difficult to build, we’re happy to help."

Finding and using statistical sources is a challenge for most students and many researchers. Finding government statistical sources are even more of a befuddlement. Requests for govenment information, let alone statistics, have dwindled in recent years in live reference situations. Providing a tool that shows, agency by agency, where government statistics hide in a group of links to database search results contributes to statistical literacy and to information literacy for government statistical sources and to the uses for government statistics.

Even though the actual publications found in these searches are not free, all of the databases used are. Over fifty government agencies of the United States federal government are now included and this is a work in progress as is the entire statistics resource guide. United States government agencies do provide statistical data for other countries.

Many teachers tell students not to use Google for serious research as I religiously did until October 2014 when I saw one web address on the MedLib-L discussion group. I have no idea what the post was about, I just noticed one web address and as the lesson evolved, I started joining the students rather than trying to change them in regards to using Google Web Search as part of my database searching research tool.

  • Google Trends Article FROM Wikipedia
Google Trends is a public web facility of Google Inc., based on Google Search, that shows how often a particular search-term is entered relative to the total search-volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages. The horizontal axis of the main graph represents time (starting from 2004), and the vertical is how often a term is searched for relative to the total number of searches, globally. Below the main graph, popularity is broken down by countries, regions, cities and language. Note that what Google calls "language", however, does not display the relative results of searches in different languages for the same term(s). It only displays the relative combined search volumes from all countries that share a particular language (see "flowers" vs "fleurs"). It is possible to refine the main graph by region and time period. On August 5, 2008, Google launched Google Insights for Search, a more sophisticated and advanced service displaying search trends data. On September 27, 2012, Google merged Google Insights for Search into Google Trends.[1]

  • Google Trends Article FROM Wikipedia
    Google Trends From Wikipedia
