Significant contributions of the Awardee of the year 2021:

Post liberalization, the society has witnessed changes in structure and composition of families, increased urbanization, dual career families, higher disposable income, and more frequent and autonomous exposure of children to media. Children have become little emperors in making purchases and this has intensified marketing efforts focusing children. My research has assessed the impact of incessant food advertising, retail food promotions, use of packaging promotions, misleading nutritional cues and online app based price promotions on the consequent shifts in attitudes, food preferences and consumption among children towards high energy-low nutrition foods. These investigations inform us about the societal changes occurring in the area of food consumption among youth which can have serious detrimental effects on their health. The studies offer implications to the government and to the policy makers who are trying hard to fight malnutrition, hunger and poverty and achieve Sustainable Development Goals. My work invites their attention to the emerging problems emanating out of food marketing which manifest through increased incidence of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and psychological disorders in children. The research findings offer policy implications for the government to increase the frequency of public service advertisements  to children and parents regarding the manner in which marketed and packaged foods should be consumed (as per guidelines offered by National Institute of Nutrition). It has also recommended that the marketers should self-regulate their food advertising and promotion efforts or use traffic light criteria through which the red, orange and the green lights can suggest whether the foods are healthy or unhealthy and thereafter make an informed decision.
