Awardee of the Year 2018

Prof. Harminder Pal Singh

The second-year “Shiv Nath Rai Kohli memorial mid-career Best Scientist award, 2018” bagged by Prof. Harminder Pal Singh, Professor, Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University Chandigarh for his contribution in the field of Biological / Life / Agricultural Sciences.

Significant contributions of the Awardee of the year 2018:

The awardee has made seminal contributions in the field of allelopathy (a type of plant-plant interaction mediated through the chemicals) and conceptualized it as the causative factor in the invasion success of alien species. Awardee and his group has pioneered the utilization of allelochemicals including volatile oils (plant volatile organic compounds), parthenin, α-pinene, ß-pinene, eugenol, citronellol and cineole for the management of noxious weeds and pathogens, and elucidated their mechanism/mode of action at the cellular level. The research findings have provided lead(s) for the development of commercially viable natural herbicides and hold immense potential for the weed control in organic farming. The research has discovered Coronopus didymus as a new hyperaccumulator from Brassicaceae, and the findings hold great significance for the use of this ecotechnology for cleaning polluted sites
