We have today (9th September 2011), issued a Sneha Sandesham Supplement on a Knanaya Global Meet held in Kottayam on 6th of August organised jointly by Knanaya Catholic Naveekarana Samithi and Knanaya Association of North America. In the forwarding note, a link to a Kannadi Program (Asianet) dealing with the sensitive issue of Endogamy by Knanaya Community was also given.

Most of us agree that a Knanaya born to Knanaya parents is a Knanaya. In order to keep the purity, one should practice endogamy. The problem is that endogamy itself is a bad practice like any other predominant incivilities such as Sati, Ayitham, etc. Church should abstain from promoting bad practices.
We all heard a lot that the theory of Knai Thomman, and his settlement has no proven validity. It is just a belief. Even though he came here in Kerala in AD 345, the generation has already mixed up enough. Knanaya never had a diocese till 1911. Until then (dark ages) how did all Knanayas maintain their purity and practice? So there is no need of a Knanaya diocese that is different from other 28 diocese of Syro-Malabar. If Knanayas want to live as gotras, they can still maintain their identity without a diocese. If they want to belong to Catholic Church, they should follow the universal rules of Catholic Church.
It was a mistake that Kottayam diocese was formed by Catholic Church. Catholic Church still can correct the mistake they have done by maintaining equal participation to everyone.
Many communities in India are practising endogamy. But many are trying to come out of it. Gandhiji, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Nehru, Annie Besant, EM Sankaran Namboothirippad, Ayyankali, and many others fought untouchability, superstitions, and bad practices. We should be proud of Indian culture and not proud of any other separatist movement.
All those Keralites live in the USA (majority of them are US citizens) must be more allegiant to USA than to India. America gave this people a real life. We do not have to transplant all the incivilities and weird attitudes of Kerala. They should contribute more to the American charities than to Kerala charities. They should follow American rules and regulations and become a role model to their children by teaching civility.
Endogamy is very indecent conduct or practice not only within the universal church but also in any society. Everyone should condemn this incivility. The evils that endogamy creates such as genetic disease, racism, discrimination, disrespect, etc. have abysmal reach; and endogamy must be eradicated. All civilized persons must have the courage to fight against this non-contributory, uncivilized evil. Those who live in India or overseas must merge with their national culture in spite of any arguments of unproven or unscientific ancestry, belief or heritage.

Knanaya Catholic parishes and Diocese are meant only for (the Catholics in) the knanaya community. They are 'knanaya communities' of the Catholics.
So the law of the church in such parishes cannot be against or detrimental to the community's very existence and to its basic law-by-traditions. The Church can have its own law in other parishes, even if it is against the knanaya law, but not in a parish, if it is 'meant' for or 'named after' the Community.
The Church also cannot decide who is a 'knanite' and a 'member of the knanaya community'. It has to be decided by (or under the guidelines of) the knanaya bishop. If this is properly understood, the Catholic church will never interfere in the matters of the Community. This is evident from the fact that it is the Church alone that granted a separate Diocese for knanaya community.
The knanaya parishes are not meant for any outsiders or
'KANA's, who endangers the very existence of the knanaya by breaking its fundamental tradition and law that-
" to be a part/ member of the community, the knanite should not be married to a non-knanite."
It is a must that descendants are to be born out of (the tradition of) endogamy for the growth, existence and to maintain maximum possible purity in the community by keeping the KANAs out of it. So if it is allowed, thereafter it cannot be called 'knanaya'.
So, if this centuries old knanaya practice is found to be illegal or unjust outside the territories of Knanaya Diocese, the only alternative for the Church is to withdraw the orders allowing separate parishes for knanaya and stop calling them 'knanaya'. No purpose will be served with such a pseudo 'knanaya' parish with the KANAs or their non-knanite family as its members or by keeping the fact hidden from the knas.
Knanaya doesn't prevent any knanite's right to adopt any faith or to marry anybody. It only denies membership in the Community / parishes meant for them and not in any other Syro-Malabar parishes. They should not absolutely have any problem in their home or family.
As the concept or law of knanaya formed by the traditions cannot be changed by anybody, there is no scope for any compromise or dialogue in the membership issue of the KANAs or their families in a knanaya community, as Mr. Babu Poozhikkunnel, KCC Gnl secretary, wrongly pointed out to "Kannadi' programme of the Asianet Channel.
The difference as per the knanaya tradition has to be made out that -
'knanites are only those born from (both) the knanite parents.
As one cannot change his parents, a knanite cannot become a non-knanite, even if he wants!!! Similarly, nobody not born to knanite (both) parents, will ever become a knanite.
Though all members of the Community are knanites, all the knanites (ie. the KANAs) are not!

We are proud to be the members of Knanaya Catholic Family. A person, who is a member of Knanaya community (Catholic and Jacobite) is born from a Knanaya Father and mother. Due to the endogamy of the community St. Pious X has declared the diocese especially for the Knanaya Catholic.
At present, lot of Knanaya boys are not getting suitable brides from the community. Some time they are forced to marry girls from outside the community. They are taking permission from the vicar of the church and leaving the Eparchy of Kottayam to join the nearest non Knanaya church.
There are other cases where due to love and other reasons people leave the eparchy of Kottayam. This is not a justifiable reason to become a member of the Knanaya Community.
To resolve this issue a solution is starting separate churches and a diocese for PLEKs.

By a celebrity speech Justice K T Thomas cannot change the status of non Knanaya Catholics into Knanaya Catholics.
The members need to stay within the rights of the Knanaya Tribe. This is applicable to all Tribes and Castes.
A person marrying an outsider is not excommunicated nor thrown out of the Knanaya Tribe or the Catholic Faith. The person is transferred to a new diocese to continue with the Catholic Faith. However the person remains a Knanaya member all his/her life but not his/her family because they are not born of Knanaya parents. Because the right of the Knanaya member is by birth it cannot be removed from the person until death or after. It has happened that after the death of husband or wife many persons have remarried from Kna tribe and returned to Kottayam diocese. It is possible because the person remain Kna all life.
If Knanaya members who married from outside the tribe are allowed to return and rejoin the diocese then what is meaning and how the purity can be maintained? And why should they return and claim to be Knanites. Happily left and should live happily in the new status. Instead of living in hatred to the diocese for "throwing them out" Why do they love the diocese and try to return. Do they feel a state of LOSS??
The Kottayam diocese cannot throw any one out of the Catholic Faith and are not allowed to do so. This is a matter of Tribal Genuineness and not of Catholic or Christian Faith. Even at the time of Jesus there were various tribes and castes. They lived in Christian Faith but in separate identity. No harm to it. There are rich and poor people. Catholic can marry and do it with Other Christian denominations but they remain believers of Jesus. When a Pentecostal believer marries a non Pentecostal believer he/she is asked to join the faith; if not thrown out and joins another faith. Why nobody questions this??
The Knanites don't even do this.
Gentlemen and brothers if you like to remain a Catholic believe in Jesus and pray. If you wish to remain a Knanaya and member of Kottayam diocese please marry from the diocese and be HAPPY. Once anyone opts to be out " not thrown out" for financial or love purpose or any other for that reason please HAPPILY accept the new status and KEEP QUIET and live HAPPILY. Why do the the Jackals try to wear lambs' skin and prowl around.
Please do not act like BATS. Not acceptable to mammals and not acceptable to birds. Can fly but cannot lay eggs. Can fly but no feathers. Suggest remain a mammal or a pure bird.
A RETHINKING IS ADVISABLE.
All believers in Jesus especially Catholics are Children of God.
