The Science Materials Resource Center (SMRC) houses research-based inquiry science kits available for classroom use. Any HISD elementary teacher may check out a kit provided they have been trained on kit usage. Any teacher not previously trained needs to complete the 2 hour online HUB course. Enrollment is easy. Here's how: Self-enrollment.
There is no cost for the training, but there is a $30.00 refurbishment fee for each kit requested which is paid by budget transfer.
The Science Materials Resource Center (SMRC) grew out of the successful HU-LINC initiative that provided quality science training and resources for elementary teachers in HISD from 1999 - 2005. As a result of this National Science Foundation Grant, high quality research based kits were purchased for district use. Since that time more kit titles have been added to the center. These kits provide all the materials necessary to conduct inquiry-based classroom investigations that are aligned to HISD objectives. The kits also include non-fiction readers and content assessments.
The SMRC is staffed by two courteous and helpful clerks, Ms. Andry Ramirez and Ms. Generosa Alvarado. These lovely ladies will help guide each teacher through the checkout process from beginning to end. The SMRC provides free pick up and delivery of the kits to HISD schools through campus mail.
