2009-2010 Successes, Honors, and Unique Features
Smithridge Elementary is a large, PreK – 5 neighborhood school, with most of the 600 students walking to school. HeadStart is located on campus to serve the community. Smithridge also hosts four half-day special
education pre-kindergarten classrooms. The COW bus also services neighborhood pre-school children, Monday – Thursday. The CALF van provides weekly parenting classes for the parents of our COW bus pre-schoolers. Smithridge has five full day kindergartens which is helping our students to be better prepared for first grade.
Smithridge teachers continue to develop professionally to better serve the needs of our large ELL population. SIOP (sheltered instruction) and GLAD are a main focus of professional development. Twelve teachers have their ESL endorsement with three additional cohorts (another twelve teachers) working towards completion of an ESL endorsement. Grades 1-5 reading intervention blocks include nine teachers who have been trained in Reading Recovery.
ARRA funding from Title 1 has provided additional reading resource/intervention help by funding a .5 position. Other Title 1 funding allows kindergarten classrooms to have bilingual aides and assistants which greatly accelerates learning English.
RTI is a successful program at Smithridge. A team of teachers along with the administration, counselor and school psychologist meet weekly in IAT to discuss student progress and achievement. Smithridge is adding math intervention along with the current reading intervention/enrichment blocks in response to AYP data that shows more math intervention/enrichment is needed.
Parent Involvement has increased. We continue to address the needs of the families in this community through response to parent surveys.
During the summer of 2009, Smithridge was revitalized and received new classroom furniture, updated electrical supply, greater internet access, Promethean (ActivBoards) in every classroom, new bathrooms, fire alarm system, and phone system. Overall, Smithridge has been modernized with improved safety features.
Smithridge provides a comprehensive literacy program focusing on the diverse learning levels of all our students. Every student has a 90 minutes daily reading block along with a daily intervention/enrichment block. Students in grades 1, 2, 3 have a 30 minute daily intervention/enrichment block and students in grades 4 and 5 have a 45 minute daily intervention/enrichment block. Additionally, students who are in tier 2 or 3 receive additional support through reading resource and reading recovery. Title One also provides SES afterschool tutoring.
