House Rule Update

posted Jul 19, 2018, 8:20 AM by Morgan Trevani

Fixing some more House Rules. Apparently, I left out rules for how to start a new sphere of influence. Derp. So here's how to do that:

rom the Influence Rules:

By spending Influence Actions to Grow, you can increase the value of an Influence. Each Grow Action you spend grants 1 level of that Influence that you can purchase for use in the following Cycle.

For example, if you have Police 3 and you use one of your Police Actions to Grow your Police, you may purchase Police up to a 4 the following Cycle. If you have Police 3, but have already used all three of your Police Actions, thus want to use Underworld to Grow it, you must take 2 Underworld Actions to Grow 1 dot of Police and may purchase another dot of Police Influence the following Cycle.

To start a new Sphere of Influence also requires a Grow action (or a DTA). Since you have no dots in that Sphere yet, it takes 2 Grow Actions from another Sphere to start a new one.

And f
rom the Downtime Action Rules:

Influence Actions:

Influences use their own system, and are not explicitly tied to the Downtime Action system. However, you may expend one Downtime Action in order to gain two additional Influence Actions in a Cycle. You may only use this Downtime Action once per cycle. Alternately, you may use this DTA to Grow an Influence once per Cycle, including starting a new sphere of Influence.

Additionally, the following Influence Actions also requires the expenditure of (a) Downtime Action(s).

  • Using Occult 5 to acquire a minor magical item always takes 1 Downtime Action (in addition to your usual Influence Downtime Action).

Using Occult 5 to acquire a specific item requires two Downtime Actions (one to Investigate/Research the item and one to acquire it).

New House Rules

posted Jul 2, 2018, 8:37 AM by Morgan Trevani

If you wish to grant Fame to an Alt ID, the Fame rating cannot be higher than your Alt ID’s rating. (I.e. You can’t have Fame x3 on an Alt ID x2.) The Alt ID simply can’t hold up against that much public scrutiny.

Something I hadn't caught before: our house rules said that Tenebrous Form is NOT a form changing power. Reading the power, it most definitely IS, so that rules has been removed.

If the Combo Discipline you want to teach has a Clan-Specific Discipline in it (Dementation, Protean, etc.) you *must* have that Discipline In-Clan in order to teach the Combo.

Just a couple of things that have cropped up in various circumstances in the last couple of weeks, so BAM! New rules.

House Rules Update

posted Jun 12, 2018, 10:18 AM by Morgan Trevani

Currently found in the Downtime Actions House Rules, I have added the following. If STs feel like this is getting overused/abused, we may limit it further. (Limitations on how many resources you can spend at once, or a maximum limit to how many DTAs it can reduce, or such.) We might also expand it to cover other types to Downtime Actions, but for now, we'll test it out on these two common actions. This is found under the 'Abilities and Backgrounds that Affect Downtime Actions' section...

Resources: Sometimes, you just want to make work go faster. For the Downtime Actions required to Build/Improve a Property, or for Crafting, you may expend a temporary dot of Resources to skip one Downtime Action normally required to complete your project. You may reduce your total Downtime Actions needed for such a project up to your rating in Resources. (Example: You want to improve your 1 point Haven to a 5-point Haven. You've already used your other Downtime Actions this cycle, but you have Resources 5. You can expend 4 dots of your Resources as if they were Downtime Actions in order to purchase your property up to a 5 without waiting until next cycle.)

I have also added 'Building or Improving a Property' to the Downtime Actions list (as previously, only 'Maintaining a Property' was there, which is different). This is mostly just a reference note that points you to the Property Rules, as I don't want to duplicate things too much, but I felt it worth referencing in the list.

House Rules Update

posted Dec 6, 2017, 8:06 AM by Morgan Trevani

The ST Team has come up with a couple of new rules. These rules can be found in either the SMD House Rules file, or the Disciplines & Rituals file, on the website under House Rules.

Notes in italics aren't technically part of the house rule, and are just here for explanation.

  • PCs based at SMD no longer spend XP to raise their Humanity/Path rating. Morality is something that is often in flux, and spending and losing XP is not necessary, and can often hinder the RP associated with a vacillating Humanity/Path rating.
    • (This also means that there is no longer the XP requirement portion of our House Rule regarding Unburdening the Beastial Soul (Obeah).)

  • A PC may teach another PC the Advanced level of one of the cardinal 8 Disciplines (Animalism, Auspex, Celerity, Dominate, Fortitude, Obfuscate, Potence, & Presence), but there MUST be a payment of at least a Major Boon (or an equivalent payment, as approved by an ST), registered with both the Harpy AND with Storytellers before the power can be taught. The discipline being taught must be In-Clan for the teacher.
    • Characters from other games can only teach a character based at Vitae Aeternus (or vice versa) with the express permission of both games' Storyteller Staffs, AND the characters must both be "signed in" to Vitae Aeternus (This includes someone visiting in an email scene).
    • This requires a Downtime Action as normal. A google form has been created to log this teaching with the Storytellers. You can find it here.

  • Calling the Restless Spirit:
    • By enacting this ritual, you can summon up a ghost-like manifestation of a deceased individual for five minutes of conversation after succeeding on a Simple Test. Any interruption ends the conversation. You must be within 10 feet of the corpse or other significant remains. This power gives you no control over the entity, which is not required to do the summoner's bidding. No powers of any kind will affect the target of this ritual. The entity summoned by this ritual is NOT a Wraith; rather, it is a projected memory image of the target of this ritual.
    • (It has been run this way for years, but never written into the house rules. Taking care of that, finally.)

Formal Court Oct. 21, 2017

posted Oct 11, 2017, 10:14 AM by Morgan Trevani

Game on October 21st, 2017 will be Formal Court. Give peoples a chance to dress up. Since our games pretty much dance around Halloween this year, we'll just do a normal formal court and let people dress a bit wilder than normal if they like.
