Academic Background and Fields of Interest:
Carolin Aronis is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Communication at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, currently visiting the Communication Department at the University of Colorado at Boulder. With the support of the Hebrew University President Scholarship she dedicates her time to the last stage of writing her dissertation on Intimacy and Media. In the dissertation she investigates the ways in which intimate relationships are established between individuals to anonymous media performers, analyzing the practices the media uses (consciously and unconsciously) to bring the performers closer to the addressees, to "privatize" their image, and to turn them into "someone" for the audience. She earned her master's degree in the Department of Communication at the Hebrew University, and her M.A. thesis was written on maternal discourse and representation of motherhood in the media. She has also investigated for several years the role of Tel Aviv balconies as special spaces for communication and identity in the city.
Her research interests lie in the establishment of communication between distant others through mediated and/or public conditions. She is also interested in communication theories, discourse, gender, space, and urban culture.
Between 2004-2010 Carolin served as a lecturer and a teaching assistant for undergraduate and graduate communication students at the Hebrew University, at the College of Management and at Sapir College. For three years she worked as the B.A. degree counselor of the Department at the Hebrew University, and from 2009-2010 she led a discussion and writing group for Ph.D. students (Establishing Identity and Social Relations). She is one of the founders and administrators of the Israeli Social Science PhD. Association Email List (https://sites.google.com/site/candidatesphd/), founded in 2008 and already includes 500 participants. These days Carolin lives in Colorado, spending most of her hours in the library – writing.
